I got my Nexus today, but still using my X right now. I told them I would activate it later, was to busy right now to switch phones. Anyway, can I root it without having it activated?

Sure, I would just unlock the bootloader cause it erased everything but root doesn't.

I unlocked and rooted before I activated. If I was you I would unlock the bootloader, activate, get the OTA (assuming 4.0.1 came with it, if you root then get the OTA you will have to root again), then root.
