Root [International] [Rooted user] Two questions; one, disabling Google Play Services, two, Unrooting

Hey

So I have two separate problems, and hence two separate questions.

One. I've disabled Google Play Services to increase the One's battery life. Which helps *quite* a lot. But I've ended up loosing a lot of sync functions etc. Any ideas?

Two. Mine's a rooted phone, but I wanted to upgrade to 4.3. I used a stock ROM, the result being that now I'm on Androind 4.3... along with HTC Sense 5.0. And OTA upgrades don't really work.

The phone is also quite buggy, perhaps because of a mixture of the above two.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

What happens with Google Services is that if you disable one function it can have a detrimental effect on another completely unexpected function. The best way around that is to pick a rom with Aroma installer that lets you select what functions you want installed.

if your already unlocked you won't loose data
unlocking the bootloader at HTCDEV completely wipes the phone

I'm not sure I understand your question
your phone is unlocked bootloader .. do you have custom recovery installed ? Like TWRP or CWM ?
Are you looking to install custom Roms like cyangenmod or google play edition, MIUI, Insertcoin ...etc ?

what do you mean by "still get the installer" ? you referring to OTA Updates ?

I'm looking to upgrade to Android 4.3 with Sense 5.5, but I'd like to activate enough of the Google Play Services to make sure I get my Calendar and Attach Picture and all working, while keeping my battery life as long as it is.

If you are thinking of installing a custom ROM, even one based on the same base software that you are currently running, I'd advise backing up all of your apps and data first (and, of course, taking a backup using the custom recovery in addition - always do this before flashing anything at all).

You might get away with just flashing a custom ROM over the current one, if they are similar enough. But if you have problems you may need to do a factory reset to fix them, so it's best to have done all the backups just in case (so that you can restore your stuff after the reset).

How did you apply your current update? If you are already having problems then you may be due a reset anyway.

There are plenty of good Sense ROMs you can use. In fact there are quite a few Android 4.4/Sense 5.5 ROMs these days, though personally I'm running 4.3 (ViperOne, which I've found to be very solid and trouble free). The Aroma installer IB refers to is the install script which most ROMs use, including many Sense ROMs.

Do you know which bit of Google Play Services is the problem? Sometimes Google just screw up bits of this, e.g. there was a period recently when location services were sucking a lot of power (maybe still are - I have mine off most of the time).

In that case I highly recommend insertcoin 6.0.5 (4.3+5.5) The viperrom mentioned above has tons of settings and options and is also 4.3+5.5

I flashed by current update, but I was already facing the issues even without it.

And ViperOne or InsertCoin are similar to have to probably not cause problems with old data?
And would using either help with the battery life?

your old data has to go in most cases
Google keeps track of everything you install from the play store so it's not that big of a deal to reinstall your apps. Battery life is very user independent what works for me may suck for you, that being said InsertCoin has amazing battery life. I'll post a graphic of the last weeks battery usage on my phone

the main point of it is my phone never goes below 50% with normal day to day usage

what Data ? your sdcard will remain but your app's will be removed and reinstalled

Don't forget,you can make a nandroid backup prior to flashing the new Rom. If the resetup becomes to much of a pain,or the Rom does not fix your issues you can always restore it and exactly where you were wen you made it.

You can also use an app like titanium backup or my backup pro to back up all of your user apps and their corresponding data,wich will make the re-setup considerably quicker.

As long as all your contacts,calender,etc are synced with google,they will all automatically come back you you sign into gmail on the new Rom.

You're not giving the Rom a fair shot. As we've said,you need to do a full wipe and start fresh.

One problem I'm still having, though. Messengers, like WhatsApp BBM and Facebook Messenger, suck up a lot of battery, when in use. I don't suppose anything can be done about that?

Edit: It's actually quite surprising. The battery level would stick to one percentage for hours, then I'd use a messenger for a short period of time, and it'll drop four-five percentages.

Glad its working better for you. there is nothing that I know of that can be done with those apps,but I don't personally use either. Maybe someone else will have some advice for you on that issue
