Having looked around I cant see any options/apps which will achieve this on an un-rooted phone.

If I were to go down the Custom ROM route, can anybody recommend a good Sense based ROM which has an alternative wake facility. (I used to have a Desire and liked this facility with the center/track button).

    Thanks in advance

I think WidgetLocker has an option to wake with the volume buttons. I'll have a play about with it later.

In some custom ROM's, there's a sweep to wake function. What that does is wakes the screen when you sweep your fingers over the capacitive buttons at the bottom. It's done at the kernel level, so any ROM could do it if you flashed a compatible kernel.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136731

Never used it, but that looks to offer the function.

Many thanks El P'. Not sure I can be bothered to root/flash etc as I am happy with the current setup - it would be good to know if Widget Locker does this before purchasing.

The option is there, but I can't get it to work. :(.

Could just be my current setup though, I'm sure I've had it working before.

You might want to look at screebl, which looks to lock/wake based on your phone's orientation. There's a beta and a lite version so you try for free before you buy it.

I know what you mean re. setup too, redoing everything can be a pain, but Carbon backup can backup pre root and restore everything post root by the looks of things. Also, Nova has a backup and restore option so you don't lose home screen placements etc.

I'll have a look around, see what your other options are for unlocking and post if I find anything (I'm working so it may be later though).

I had Screebl before on my Pulse, but interestingly it doesnt seem to wake the One X when you pick it up. Will have a look at Carbon perhaps I'll have to bite the bullet and root/Custom ROM.

Edit: Just installed Awesome On/Off which seems to work, although will need to monitor what impact it has on the battery.

Hopefully not too much, glad you found something.

I'm very pro root, so I'd go for it anyway :p

Thanks for the tip with Awesome on/off. I've only installed the free version right now, but seems to work well. Is it worth paying for the full app, does the proximity sensor part work with the One X?

I'm still using the free version but was wondering about the same as I find it does not suit the car because of the bumps and jolts, however I use a Llama event/action to switch it off when I connect my headset.
There is a battery impact but it isnt huge in my experience.
I will probably go with El Pres' advice idc - just summoning up the enthusiasm to backup/unlock/root/flash etc

You can be rooted and ROM'd in less than an hour!

LoL ok ok I'll do it. Especially as I have just twigged that my Photos and Music are already in various clouds ! Just need to review which apps/widgets etc I'll need to re-install asap.

I see on your profile you have a Nexus 4 now, assume you moved on from the HOX ? How does it compare. I got fed up with waiting for stock at launch of the N4 and bought a returned HOX which I am delighted with after the Desire (also figured that I would miss Sense !)

Yeah, using the Nexus 4 now, my Mrs is using the One X.

I had a few issues with it (replaced twice) but sometimes I miss the One X TBH. The nexus is a great phone, speedy (more so than the OX), battery life is amazing and the screen is good too.

However, I miss the camera and feel/build of the One X. I'd also prefer a little more storage, but I can work around it (and it will be easier when I move to an unlimited data plan in Nov).

Sometimes, I miss Sense, but I think that's just because I liked the option of having Sense or AOSP ROMs.

Well I did it eventually, took more than an hour to unlock and root though. I had to spend a while getting my head around which files to unpack and fastboot etc the Cursed4Eva videos gloss over this a little bit. (Also firmware versions/CIDs)
Now running Venom/ViperX ROM which carries the swipe2wake/sleep function which is what I really wanted, after initially flashing ARHD. V Impressed so far with ViperX.

One thing that was painless was that Google remembered all my Apps and re-installed them and with photos and music already in the cloud I will have absolutely no worries about re setting up/losing stuff like when I did this on previous phones.

Excellent, glad you managed it and it has what you were looking for. :)

Viper is great too, so customisable and very stable.

It works very well I think, there is a slight battery hit, but ultimately I wanted to be able to manually wake the device rather than rely on the App. No real sense to that I know but it probably goes back to the trackpad mod I had on my Desire. I found the Free App was not great when cradled in the car as the movement continually activated it although I think the paid version has a solution for this.

The battery hit is because it has to keep the device "awake" iirc. If you check your battery stats screen, the device doesn't really go in to a deep sleep.

Although strangely, running a sweep2wake kernel on CM10 gave me the best battery life.

Wouldn't that make sense though? Isn't sleep2wake is set up so that the device can go to sleep and the functionality will still work?
