Is anyone running the AOSP 1.6 ROM?

How is it? I'm mainly concerned about having to do things like the workaround to get certain apps to appear in the Marketplace, but I'd really like to try 1.6. If anyone could answer some questions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    1. Can you install it over FRESH 1.1?
    2. Is it compatible with the Gumbo Kernal?
    3. What are any major features missing from it? Are there any fixes?
    4. How much hassle would you rate installing it and getting everything to work on a scale of 1-10? 1 being just a flash .zip from SD card, 5 being manual rooting, and 10 being having to install, perform many different operations/installations to get everything working.
    5. Will all of my apps be backed up? I am only worried about this because I heard that they will disappear from your downloads list after the first time that you view the list after uninstalling them.
    6. Any awesome apps that don't work on 1.5 like Google Maps Navigation?
    7. Anything else I should know?

Also, is anyone using the MoDaCo ROM? What version of Android is it? I notice that it is advertised as "no wipe required." How is it?

I really appreciate any info. :D

Modaco's most current one is android 1.5, same as Fresh.

I believe the 1.6+ market has issues if you sign in using the same account info as you did on 1.5. Or rather, the 1.5 market will have issues once you've signed in under the same account info on 1.6+. Some of the apps won't show up. There's a fix for it, but it's extremely lengthy by the look of things.

That's what I was worried about. I would just like it to work without having to go into some in-depth workaround. I don't mind a minor tweak here of there, though. :/

well, i THINK that if you make a different account through google to sign into, you won't have any problems with the market later. I could be wrong.

Yeah, not going to make a new Google account when I have everything tied to my current one.

Is everyone only running 1.5? It seems like at least a few would be on 1.6+.

I think the fact that its not a fully functional ROM is what keeps most people away

There are a lot of people at XDA running 1.6 with only a few problems. Not perfect, but I'm starting to think that with an HTC experience phone, we'll never have anything perfect that isn't HTC blessed. This makes me sad.

XDA is super slow these days and getting new servers, so be patient, but the walkthrough and explanation of issues is pretty solid.

I don't believe the issue is with a google account, but the fact that the 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1 roms are all development roms. Because it's a dev rom, you won't be able to see pay or protected apps in the market.

I believe there is a (lengthy) workaround for 'tricking' the market app into thinking you've got a 1.5 phone, but that kind of defeates the purpose of having a 1.6 phone to begin with.

I believe the dev's are working on getting a fully functional 2.1 working, but they are having problems with the kernal I think? It's a version issue. 1.5 uses version 26 or something and 1.6+ uses 29? I'm not exactly sure, but they can't get it fully working until they have the right kernal, and unless HTC updates the phones, they'll have to go through all the code and patch things together. It's very time intensive.

I think they've reached the limits of 1.5, and 1.6+ isn't really viable until they get this issue resolved. They're working on it, but it's time intensive. Change Some code, apply to the phone, boot and see if it works. That takes a while for each little change.

The one to blame is HTC, taking WAY to long to release an update. Too bad the Nexus One isn't available for sprint, at this point I would take a stock android over the Sense UI, especially with all the different apps to change the appearance.

From what I've read, HTC has already sent the update to Sprint. Sprint's doing their goofy ass apps and testing the thing like crazy. So it's not HTC we're waiting for, it's Sprint.

And as far as I'm concerned, if you really want the 1.6+ apps that bad, then go get a different phone. Or be patient like everyone else and we'll get the update when we get it. At which point, we'll have one of the best phones on the market, especially with how quick we'll have custom 2.1 ROM's.

I'm using it and have ZERO problems. I'm loving it! I don't use blutooth though.

Could you elaborate on your ability to use the Market?

What guide did you use to install? Did you do the work-around to view protected apps on the Market?

All you have to do is do a wipe from the recovery menu, flash the ROM & flash Google bits.

Where did you read that? I've heard speculation that since HTC said Q1 of 2010, and Sprint said First Half of 2010, that it meant Sprint could hold onto it, but its just been speculation. I've definately not heard that HTC has completed it, and I check daily. If they had, you would think that the GSM hero would have been updated already.

What is it? Please forgive all of my questions; I would just like to have a functional 1.6 ROM.

On the Sprint Community. One of the employees said they were testing it and it was "going well". They're still saying 1H2010 though.

Ok, before I take this plunge can someone verify that I will be taking the correct steps?

    1. Download the whole ROM here: [ROM-DEV] AOSP 1.6 | no BT - xda-developers
1.5 Download Google Bits and Superuser here: Extra Features on AOSP 1.6 - xda-developers
    2. Copy zips to SD card.
    3. Make nandroid backup.
    4. Wipe the device using the recovery menu.
    5. Flash the ROM.
    6. Flash Google Bits and Superuser.
    7. Reboot.
    8. ??? Then what?

I noticed that there were extra commands that had to be done if I install Superuser (Busybox?). Do I need Superuser? What do these extras do?

Just do everything the guide says. BusyBox will give you access to third party apps. Just follow the guide. It's fairly simple. And Google Bits gives you the Market and all of that good stuff. Again, this is simple.

Sorry, just making sure. You were so nonchalant about it.
