There are some apps which I don't want to upgrade. Shazaam comes to mind since it is now a paid service. Others I don't want to upgrade because the current app works for me and the "upgrade" introduces problems.

Is it possible to turn off the upgrade notification for some but not all apps? I don't want to accidentally include an app when I am upgrading others.

If you've had Shazam for a while, you should get grandfathered in for unlimited use if you upgrade. If in doubt, back up first.

Not that that answers your question, but perhaps renders it moot for now.

There's an app called AppBrain that will let you exclude any apps you don't want upgraded (in addition to doing a lot of other things app related).

But I don't think AppBrain will prevent the default notifications, will it? (I honestly don't know - just started using AppBrain last week.) Is there a way to turn off the default notifications?

For me what seems to have worked for most apps and AppBrain is this:
    -Open AppBrain
    -Manage my apps
    -Sync with AppBrain
Any apps that have updates available will show at the top of the list with 'update' next to them. Click the red 'X' on the right hand side of the apps that show as having updates available. You'll be given the following options:
    -Skip this update
    -Never update this app
    -Uninstall this app
Choosing 'Never update this app' has seemed to get rid of the update notifications for me in most instances (LauncherPro being the only exception so far).

    Your mileage may vary.
