From the moment you deicded to Root you put your phone on overdrive. So any kind of tinkering with it now can result in fail, through proper maintenance and smart usage will make it that no matter what kind of tweaking you do to it, you will be safe as long as your phone allows it and you follow proper procedure.
With that said, SetCPU for Root Users is the app that allows you to set the speed that you will overclock your phone to. You will need to flash a kernel into your phone to even begin overclocking.

It has a list of kernels for Froyo (2.2) .. there are a lot of them because not all will work on every phone. In this case, every phone is unique and will take or not take some or most of those. You will just need to find the one that suits your phone best.
