Or is there a better way for occasional use when wifi is down at the coffee shop?
If you do the DUN hack, the built-in hotspot app will work without charging you.

DUN hack? Any forum links to the vergiage?
If you are rooted you can download "Wireless Tether" that's what I use.
I'm still not sure that Verizon won't catch on to this.
For my tethering needs, I use easy-tether for wired or wireless tether for wifi. I know the latter requires root, not sure about the former.
Or Barnacle is good too. That's what I use on android 1.6.
Thats what I was thinking. Using some app has the 'I had no idea I had to pay for that' going, where the hack is a clear circumvention of charges. One is easy to play dumb about, the other not so much.
I'll give it a try, lol...now just got to find a phone to tether off my Inc!
No, easy tether doesn't require root
easy tether works on my 2.2 Dinc.
