Is Talkatone the best Google Voice app or should I use another one?

I have become a big user of Google Voice and have several phone numbers via multiple email accounts. On my iPhone I have tried several apps and found Talkatone to be among the others but there were some close competitors. Now that I have an Android tablet I have tried Talkatone. It is nice but the UI doesn't seem as nice as the iOS version. I have tried the Google Voice app but like on the iPhone it's not a strong contender. Are there any other Google Voice apps that I should look into? Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's totally going away, I just think that Google voice with VOIP calling is going to get integrated into hangouts, considering it already has on iOS. They only thing going away is choice of apps.

Hope you are right. I really liked to be able to make/receive phone calls on my GV number using GrooveIP.

If I can do the same with hangouts, I can live with that.

Same, it's this combo that makes it possible to deal with the low minute amount on the T-Mobile $30 plan.

Has anyone used Hangouts? Is it something we install?

Yep, it's a free app on the play store or possibly comes pre-installed on your device depending what it is. Current functionality included is Google Talk, Google+ hangouts, and sms/mms messaging through your carrier number. On iOS, it also has google voice VOIP calling and sms messaging through your Google voice number. This functionality is predicted to come to the android version in the near future.

For what it is worth Talkatone is going to try and survive the coming Google Voice cutoff by effectively providing their own VOIP service. Which probably (and this is me guessing here) means they will provide you a phone number which you can then route your Google Voice number too. Whether they can do this for free or not remains to be seen.

I hope it works that way or th Google Voice does finally integrate with Google Hangouts with a real VOIP service for free using a codec as robust as OPUS for crystal clear calls.
