Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that with an unlocked phone the main advantage is you can take it to any carrier. However I'm also under the impression that with CDMA even if you're unlocked you're still tied to either VZW or Sprint and don't have a choice of one or the other. Is this true? If I buy an unlocked Sprint phone can I put it on VZW? If I unlock my DInc when my contract expires can I take it to Sprint?

There is no true way of 'unlocking' a CDMA phone. You can, however, flash the CDMA phone to work with another carrier. But you have to know specifics about that carrier. I also think that, even if you do this successfully, both VZW and Sprint will reject you based on your IMEI/ESN. They know your device shouldn't be on their network, so they don't let you. But sub-carriers like Cricket and MetroPCS couldn't care less where your phone came from, so long as all your info is correct.
