Is there a download out there that makes it possible to convert back to Android 1.5 on my Droid Eris? 2.1 is really laggy on my phone and I'm getting fed up with it so I want to run 1.5 and have it run smoothly again.

root. someone released a 1.5 rom recently, or you can downgrade to 1.5 stock.

Don't downgrade to 1.5. You should root and install xtrSense 4.0.6.1. It's a custom ROM and your phone will run smoother and faster than ever!

I have no idea how to root my phone. What's the benefits of rooting? I just want my phone to run smoothly, I don't care for customizing my phone with rooting it.

You might not care for the custom looking ROMS or whatever. But if you root your phone and install certain ROMS on your phone it will run a thousand times better. And it will lose all or most of the problems you are experiencing.

The effort involved in going back to 1.5 would most certainly exceed the effort in involved with the 1 click root method of rooting (it's 1 click, after all). If you're going to spend the time and energy, go forward rather than backward. You'll get the smooth operating phone that you want, and you'll get some new features too. If you liked the look and feel of 1.5, I'd recommend the xtrSense ROM - it's going to feel the most like 'home' to you and the speed is great.

  9. Great post, hoto. :)

As an alternative, and closer to what the OP seems to want (choices, folks.. all these nice choices ;)):

    Download this:

    http://www.pcdphones.com/device-downloads/8-mr2-upgrade

    Then:

    1. Unzip the file
    2. Plug your phone to your PC/MAC.
    3. Find your folder (MAC or PC folder)
    4. Run .exe file in the folder "RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_1.17.605.1_release_s igne d_with_driver.exe"
    5. follow on screen instructions.

Thank you all for the fast responses.

mhotovec - I'll try that out and reply back on how it went. Thank you!

Frisco - I'll certainly try that method out if the other choice doesn't go well.

Again, thank you all, I really appreciate it.

mhotovec - That second link confused me a lot.

Do I just download the xtrSENSE4.0.6.1 file and just go straight to the install process or do I need to do all the other things on the page like the GScript, Flash10 and the Apps2sd?

All you NEED to do is download the 4.0.6.1 file and flash it through recovery (that statement assumes 2 things, 1) that you've rooted first 2) that in the process of rooting you've learned what recovery is and how to flash a zip file)
The other things you mentioned are optional. You may want to try one or all of them some day, but not today. :)

Well, there are lots of directions and ways to get rooted (and instructions for doing each). To get rooted on the Eris, you need to get a custom recovery partition installed. This custom recovery allows you to install (flash) either a new custom ROM (that will replace your current phone's operating system) or update-type files that just update the currently installed operating system.

You should take a peek around the http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/ subforum and get a little more comfortable with rooting concepts. I suggest reading through the stickied threads first.

When you are ready, there are at least three good, options for you to root and then flash your custom ROM (all discussed in this thread http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/158369-rooting-htc-eris.html):

    1. http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html - this thread by erisuser1 is very detailed, thorough and guides you along with screenshots; lots of folks have used it very successfully; this method allows you to root without having to use your PC or MAC

2 http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html - this thread by jcase is very quick and easy, but details are a little sparse, but its your easiest route

    3. http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html - this thread by surgeon0214 / alprazolam walks you through rooting via the Android SDK; this is a good method if you are comfortable with the Windows Command Prompt and want to know about each step in detail (you'll learn a lot by doing this)

Yes, the one-click method will work on any 2.1 leak. The new root methods (erisuser1's http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html, jcase's http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html, and surgeon0214's http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html) all use the same root exploit and will work on all versions of Android for the Eris.

Which question are you bumping? lol...(I'm assuming that its the root questions above).

Ammendent to the above: there is also the option to simply root your phone in-place without installing a custom rooted ROM. This would give you root/superuser access and allow you to install root-only apps (wi-fi tethering, for example), overclock to make your phone run faster (you will have to flash an update to the kernel to do this and acquire the setCPU app).

^---- What they said. I've been running the KaosFroyo v30 ROM for a week now and I miss sense but this thing is FAST!!! If you must have sense, go with a 2.1 based ROM and have fun, I used the 1-click method and it is virtually idiot proof. I also recommend setcpu but make sure you're paying attention to the battery life thread on xda.

As for your apps, make a backup. I've had Astro installed forever and just made a backup of all my aps on the SD card. Once I flashed the new ROM I jumped over to the market and d/l'ed Astro again and in 5min had all my aps back. There are other methods, this is the one I used.
