Can I download an app from the market and save the apk somewhere so that if it's ever removed from the market I can re-install it again?

you would need to be rooted to achieve this, and have root explorer, to extract the apk to your sd card

Apk's are generally located on your phone in the root directory system in the sub-directory apps. I say generally because some games are downloaded into the system/downloads folder, or even onto the SD card. You can also transfer apk's from your PC to the SD card and vice-versa.

The free app called Astro has a back-up program (under tools) that backs up all of your apps as .apk files. No need to be rooted for this.
