Is there an app that will only turn 3g on when needed?

With 3g off, it doesn't just double my battery life, it multiply. Like the GPS, I'm looking for an app that will only activate 3g/4g when an app requires it such as browser, world newspaper etc. I don't need 3g to be on all the time when phone is unlocked. I do have a widget on my home screen that will turn 3g on and off, but I am looking for a better app that will only turn 3g on when need it.

(asleep) It's been 5 hours since 3g is off, and my phone has yet to lose a percent. Usually, this will lose about 5-10 percent of battery life even with juice defender. I have found so many great apps out there, but I have yet to find an app that I previously described. Mobile internet kills the battery life almost as much as GPS/use wireless network. I hope there is an app that relates to what I'm talking about the near future.

I think that you could get Tasker to do this. You would need to set it up so that 3G was off unless specific programs were started. If you google it and find the Tasker website there is a week's free trial which should be enough time to try it.

Most widget based apps will have a widget for that. I use Widgetsoid2, has data on/off toggle.

Tasker looks too complicated. And I have a feeling with all those settings saved, the app will crash. Oh well, I guess I'll just use the widget to turn 3g off and on.

Personally I use QuickSettings, a free application that acts as a direct shortcut to set various thing, like 3g, wifi, display brightness, etc. Put a link to the application in one of your custom home screens and you are ready to go, a real time-saver

You don't find Juice Defender works? You can configure it on a per app basis. If not, there's also Widgetsoid, to control the radios manually.

I use Connection Manager for that, nothing to it.
