Self explanatory. I really want this to go away. It's (frankly) embarrassing when I turn it on at work. It used to be silent, with the exception of notification sounds on booting up.

I think having the phone on vibrate stops this? My phone never does it, even with media volume high

Neither of those will work - I'm not tech savvy enough to root (though after this update, I wish I was), and I don't care to have it on vibrate and then forget and miss calls - the vibrate function was never very strong.

Download "silent boot" from the market if you're 2.2

Put your finger over the speaker hole when you boot.

If you turn the volume all the way down it stops it. I know this from experience.

I'll try the app - thanks.

If I turn the volume down, does that mean I have to remember every time I turn it off to turn the volume down so that it's quiet before I turn it on?
