is this a K-9 issue or version 4.1.1 issue?

I use K-9 mail to check my POP server and Gmail on my Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7.0.
Maybe it's my imagination but it seems like ever since the recent update to Android 4.1.1 the tablet behaves differently as to checking ("fetching") mail.
I have K-9 set to fetch mail every 5 minutes but it seems like every time I awaken the screen the tablet reports the WiFi network in the house that it's connected and then goes and checks for mail.
I've doublechecked that I don't have any special power saving settings on so it strikes me as strange that whenever I go to the tablet that it immediately would be checking mail.
Does anyone know whether this is some kind of new, maybe unwanted, feature in 4.1.1 or in K-9?

Is it just that you have wifi set to turn off when the screen goes off? Think it's the default setting.

What you suggest is quite logical but I have scoured the settings and can not see what I need to change to make it not do that.

    Thanks for the reply.

While I do not know how to do that by default, an extensive battery saver app can do what you want. GreenPower has the option to monitor your wifi connection and keep it alive as long as its connected to a network.

You should have a settings menu (upper right of your WiFi settings page), with an advanced option. Keep WiFi on there.

I have k9 set to manual poll. I get mail notifications as mail is delivered. I'm on 4.2.1 though.
