i know i heard rumours of this before but still appears no news, is it still coming to android?
I'd also like to know, so I'll be watching this thread closely.
WhatsApp will soon be available on two other popular mobile platforms: Android and Nokia Symbian
from the official site(bottom of page).
so this app allows people to send SMS style messages to each other, for free?
Doesn't almost every single phone plan have unlimited texts these days? I'm struggling to see why people use this. Can someone enlighten me?
Here in Italy sms costs between 10-15 cents each and MMS about 30-50 cents (There could be a little difference).
There are some pay options to have free messages but they are very limitative (some are only for messages between the same carrier, other only to specific people/phone numbers but nothing really flat or really cheap).
I think this is already enough to justify the use of an app like Whatsapp.
Moreover, mms is very limitative in the multimedia content you can send.
As of now I've never managed to send via mms a picture taken with my iPhone or Nexus One without resizing it).
Actually even the try is a time wasting because it seems that most of the carriers doesn't allow to send an mms larger than 300kb (I've read this is also a technology limitation).
I think that the only real alternative would be using an email or a mobile-client for one of the common pc-side messaging system like msn, but for other reasons I'm not going to explain in this message I prefer to leave the things separated.
Just my 2 cents.
Has anyone heard any more updates on this? Plenty of my iphone using friends use this app, it would be nice to be able to use it too.
Whatsapp has been and maybe still is the best messaging application on iPhone out there. Unfortunately it is still not available yet for Android and from the team who develops the apps no news come in.
On the other hand I've got to say that with PingChat 2 (the new version of Ping) Enflick has made a great work. I can't make the comparison as of now between the new Ping and Whatsapp because I'm an happy Android user but I think that Ping could really replace Whatsapp.
Moreover since yesterday Enflick has ended the Android beta version of his client and it seems now quite stable and already AVAILABLE on the market, just search for Enflick and you'll find it. So now we already have got a way to communicate between iphone and android (but also nokia and blackberry) and the answer is PingChat! 2, I suggest you and your friends to do the switch, also hoping that this could wake Whatsapp up from the sleep.
Just my 2 cents
Some PAYG plans only give a limited number of "free" texts per top-up, and MMS can be expensive.
However, I'd never install an application like this myself, because it's lock-in to that app provider. Nice for them, not so nice for me. It would only be useful for me if world+dog had this application installed and used it regularly.
Nah, I just send e-mails with attachments instead. Has to work, doesn't it?
Without wishing to go Off Topic so apologies in advance ~ As you are a user of PingChat, why does it by default select the contacts Home telephone number.
Can't see a way to get it to use the Mobile numbers instead.
most people get unlimited texts, this does not make sense?
Correct but only if you send text messages. However, if you wish to send photo's, video's or sound files as well then it makes perfect sense.
Hey Guys - makers of PingChat here! PingChat is available on iOS / Blackberry AND Android! Other platforms coming soon! Even some surprising ones!
Enflick, I'm pleased you posted here.... maybe you can answer a question for me please.
I've loaded PingChat! but notice when you look at the list of contacts it only lists their 'Home Telephone Numbers'.
How do you get it to instead go for their 'Mobile Numbers'?
This is a very new feature and we are still working out the kinks. We will be releasing and update for this soon!
Many thanks.... I look forward to hearing this.
To text and mms (+voice messages) internationally for free.
It normally costs to send / receive texts in another country
How soon will there be any updates regarding WhatsApp for Android? All my whatsapp friends keep sending me hate texts since I switched from blackberry to android...I miss this app!
WhatsApp beta is available for Android now... just head to the following page on your phone: WhatsApp Messenger for Android
does not work for me in Denmark :-(
It's ok - no group chat, which would really be the only reason for this over the other instant messengers.
ill try the beta. but im not payin $2 a year for the same thing.
was going to try it. but it wont identify my phone on 2.2
It's bloody difficult getting mates to convert from Ping.
Ping on Android to iPhone is painful, can take DAYS for messages to come through.
pinch imessenger just release their beta, (for now iphone - android) - soon blackberry - symbian - windows mobile - facebook. does group chat - location and more. try it out it looks very nice
I'm trying this, it looks much better than whatsapp and the location-based feature is totally awesome. I mean, not only you can send messages for free, but you can locate your friends too, of course that if they allow you to. I found this from AppBrain Pinch iMessenger Beta - Android app on AppBrain
BTW, can anyone suggest other app marketplaces other than the official one by google?
I just got a spam sms telling me to try whatsapp, so I shall NOT try it ever. I don't know how they got my number.
