I've been trying to isolate the cause of random restarts on the Warp, since the B08 update doesn't seem to have reduced their frequency.

One angle I've been following is that it could be a problem with my launcher (Launcher Pro). I've gone through and tried to reduce its memory use (turned off screen caching -- which isn't really necessary on a system as fast as the Warp, unchecked the "keep launcher in memory" and "try to prevent forced closes" options, but no joy yet in terms of reducing the restarts.

It would be interesting to know what launchers people are using? Is anyone experiencing this issue with stock launcher, or is it more common with some alternative launchers than with others? Feel free to reply to this thread with your experiences with the stock and non-stock launchers.

The other area I'm starting to think about is the correlation that many people have mentioned between browser use and restarts. Usually, though not always, I'm either using a browser or have done so in the last few minutes when the restart occurs. But what occurred to me just now, when it happened not on my phone but on my Honeycomb tablet, is that it happens a lot when I'm using a newsreader or twitter client and click a link from within that app that results in a browser opening to display the page. That initial page load works fine, but I frequently (on both the Warp and my tablet) end up with a frozen system followed by a system restart if, instead of returning immediately to the original app, I browse to another page or otherwise continue using the browser window.

One way or the other, I'm convinced it's a memory management problem. Both the Warp and my tablet have 512MB memory, compared to the 1GB on a lot of more high end systems, and I suspect that both systems have heavily tweaked the OS's memory management routines to try to extract maximum performance from a relatively limited memory space.

If that really is the issue, the ultimate answer needs to come from ZTE's engineers, but in the meantime maybe we can assemble a knowledge base of usage patterns or apps that seem to increase or reduce the frequency of the problem, and even come up with best practices guidelines for minimizing the problem.

i will tell you i stopped using launcher pro, found it froze or i would have to clear data on it too many times, last straw with me was when it froze rebooted system and i couldnt access it for some reason it would show in applications but wasnt running on screen no matter what i did. i have switched to go launcher and havent looked back since. all this was before i did the B08 update.

:( That's not what I want to hear...I love Launcher Pro. But I have to admit I've been having the same kinds of problems myself. It freezes about 50% after a system restart -- I have to wait until the Warp gets around to displaying the Force Close box before and Launcher Pro restarts before I can do anything.

I'm using go launcher EX myself.
But what I did to reduce the amount of restarts from one an hour to about a couple a week was to first get rid of every wallpaper I downloaded from the site that comes with the dolphin browser (filke or something like that) then delete the bookmark.
I also had every app that was on my card moved back to my phone (that was about 35 or so). I have since been moving them back to the card a couple a week to see any changes.
Lastly, I also deleted every .apk file that was lingering in my folders except for those that are associated with system apps.
So far, it has made a 95% difference in stability for me.

Ive been using launcher pro since day one of having this phone with no problem. Only two programs have caused the problems with freezing everyone else experiences and that is the stock phone alarm and alarm clock extreme. I have figured out not using any alarm of any type has been key to stop any issues with my phone. Test that one out and report back please.

I'll definitely try this out. I have been using the stock alarm on a daily basis and a get a freeze up and reboot daily as well. I have noticed though that when the phone freezes and reboots I am usually running low on available RAM. Somewhere between 40 and 30 MB is where things begin to lock up. I say this based off what I am shown using the Sense Analog Clock Widget. Coming from a BlackBerry I am used to monitoring RAM usage. I really need to find a better way to monitor it on this phone though to narrow it down to a memory management problem.

currently i experience zero freezes, zero reboots, the only "tweak" i have is wi-fi set to never sleep. only app i avoid using is launcher pro. beyond that i install or uninstall apps at will live wall papers are almost always running there are 67 3rd party apps installed including themes, live wallpapers and games. phone is rooted and im all smiles, stability this thing is a rock.
oh woodstock77 1400hrs mon to fri is my alarm set using stock alarm

I use golauncher. After my first factory reset, as well as after the 08 update, i held off on reinstalling apps, including the launcher. I still had the shutdowns. They are less frequent since 08, but still more than should be expected.
FB often causes shutdowns, but methinks that is a flaw in the app.
Overall, I don't think the Warp issue is related to a particular app. I agree, it is likely some kind of overload-more related to the phone's abilities than how it is being used.
To that end, I wonder what impact background notifications and syncing have on the performance issue. I've turned off most of mine, and just sync on demand. That may be a reason my restarts have gone down some. Or, I may just be wearing my lucky shirt...

Trimbaud your thoughts on FB could very well be on point I found to be one of the heaviest running apps on my phone running as long as the phone was on even if i hadn't logged in to it and once logged in constantly streaming data from my phone, i have removed it as im not that a big a FB fan anyway.

I buy my ZTE Warp a week ago, rooted, GoLauncherEx, GoSMSPro, GoContacts, a lot of apps, etc, nothing to complain, everything is working perfect ,stable and fast.

Give it time. Mine worked flawlessly for 3 weeks, then it went downhill from there.

I switched from go launcher ex to adw. I noticed the memory usage has gone way down and I don't get the reboots as often. I notice the reboots happen when my phone reaches about 40 degrees celsius so I think its a heat thing, at least for my phone anyway. I try to manually reboot it every couple of days which helps reduce the Random restarts.
  13. Had mine for almost a month and it still works pretty flawlessly... Once in a while, the keyboard app crashes but that's it. Never had a restart or anything like that. So, either you guys all have a defective model, or all the launcher apps and crap like that you're tacking on to the system are effing it up! ;)

    "have a defective model...... "
that sounds like the problem because a bunch of us having the same problems, but not the same apps, sounds like that exactly. Your situation though sounds like the exception and not the rule.

im running Helauncher 2 and my phone very rarely restarts unless its a very graphics intensive game. the only complaint i have about the launcher is that it doesn't have a settings shortcut in the menu

I must admit I loaded up my Warp with tons of apps and several of the ID desktops from Boost so I could organize links to similar apps on the various "desktop" pages (if that's what you call them on a phone). I was getting lots of random reboots and lockups and have had to remove the battery on many occasions. The problem seemed to be getting worse and worse and I thought I might have to return the phone. I noticed that a lot of the lockups started when I copied the contents of my 2gb micro sd that came with the phone to a much larger (32gb) and switched out the card in the phone. I tried putting the small card back in and the lock ups and freezes stopped (for the most part). What's really wierd is that after a few days I switched back to the 32gb card and for the last few weeks the phone has been behaving fine. I did change a setting that I believe affects the memory issue significantly. Tap on the Market - Menu - Settings - and check Update over Wi-Fi only. I think alot of apps may require a reboot after update or may eat a lot of memory during the update process, especially if several apps are all updating at the same time. - Let me know if any of you have thoughts on this.

Twice tonight playing angry birds rio, locks up for a few seconds, then reboots straight to boot animation, no andy screen. Weird.

I agree with Kamau about deleting all unnecessary. apk files, that seemed to clear up the problem for me. Every time I had left a file on the phone it would start to act up,after deleting no problems. I am using Go Launcher Ex with no problems.

I've been using dolphin browser HD since day one and have had no troubles with forced reboot. My wife on the other hand has been using stock browser and gets 2 to 5 reboots daily. Maybe it is the browser causing too much stress or confusion with the ram..?

Dolphin stores and sends the URLs you type to its company servers. If anything that should cause more "stress" not less :p

Bumping because Grand Theft Auto III causes near instant reboots. I downloaded that one vampire game, which seemed to have no adverse effects.
