Issue with inserting GIF into messages

Every time I try to insert a GIF into a text message it automatically opens a new message and makes me manually enter the recipients. It will not insert the GIF directly into the message I currently have open for some reason. If I miss one recipient from the original message it sends as a separate message to the individuals I manually entered. I've downloaded multiple keyboard apps with the same result. I've downloaded Tenor, Flesky and SwiftKey. Makes me think there is some setting on my phone that controls this as it functions the same no matter which keyboard I've tried.

Any idea what setting is controlling that function? I've tried changing various settings and no luck. I'm using the default messaging app that came with the phone.

As soon as you insert any media in a text it converts from an SMS to an MMS. This could be a problem with group messaging (can anyone say 'iPhone'?). You might try a different messaging app from the one you are using now. Which one are you using now?

It's the default Messenger app that came with the phone. Version 4.0.42
