It Breaks My Heart...

If that cheers you up, I personally think that it isn't such a good deal to buy a whole new phone just for a 10-20% speed boost due to a slightly improved hardware. But then again I am no tech specialist :)

You're probably right. I'll be honest, although there's definitely a difference in speed between the hero and the desire it's not massive, at least in my experience. I've just done a quick test on Google street view and, although the desire is very impressive the hero isn't bad.

The biggest difference so far is the screen. The colours and the definition just seem to jump out at you on the desire compared to the hero, as someone with less than great eyesight that's a big plus for me.

I'd agree though, that unless you've got

Not true actually. They make you do that with all phones but it's really just a hold over from the old Nickel based phones of a few years ago. Modern Lithium-Ion batteries don't need the initial 'priming charge' you can start using them pretty mjuch as soon as the first charge is about 40% or higher.

I've never given any of the Li-Ion batteries in any of my phones the initial few hours recommended and I've never had any battery issues.

Yup :) I have some theory on why they still recommend to charge it for several hours, besides the Ni-Mh "legacy". It could be that it helps the battery "meter" display algorithms to "figure out" the battery better. If the given algorithm doesn't rely on the voltage alone but on the amount of power delivered as well, it'd help for it to know the actual battery capacity by charging it fully first.

The only thing that makes me jealous here is that YOU guys have THE great opportunity to upgrade your phones with big discounts on the price... It's called an effective market economy with all the benefits from the competition between the providers... I am from Bulgaria and here the market is evolving, yes, but still if I want a desire I will have to wait 2 months and have the option only to buy it - sim free for

I'll be watching with interest too.

I used to adore SE smartphones back in the days of UIQ1, but every OS since then has been so bugged and unstable that its been impossible to use for anything other than a glorified mp3 player.

(edit) Oh, and if this turns out to be an April Fools thread, my SE opinions still stand, and its well after 12pm anyway!

I just dumped my Hero for a Nexus One (going to try straight google as I got fed up with the lack of updates from HTC), it's a fair old leap from the Hero to the N1, I'd imagine HTC's version will be similarly improved. I've had it since about Monday night, I'm still setting it up but the Hero's in the dust now, get an upgrade if you can.

Lekky won't be around for a while now..

Lol you were right, though I haven't touched the phone much, ironing, hoovering, cleaning the fridge (managed to drop one of the massive glass separators which proceeded to hit the floor and break into 10 million pieces.. :(

Now, i'm just backing up my apps and data and going to transfer!! Speed is excellent, i'm running modaco with an overclocked cpu on my hero and you can still easily tell the difference..

But what really jumps out at you is the display, its awesome, especially side by side to the hero, it really does make the hero look sub-standard, take the desire away and the heros screen looks good again, but its really a massive jump.

EEP! Ok, question. Do you miss the 'chin'?

Yes! But the Desire has a mini chin, its only slight, but a Hero owner can recognise it :p

I'd go for it, if the Desire aint right for you, flog it and go back to the Hero;)

If I give up the Hero for a Legend or Desire Orange want the Hero back. If I choose to walk away they've told me I can break the contract and keep the phone as a consolation.

I'd prefer to take a Legend on my original contract, I'm not too bothered about speed, the Legend is pant wettingly gorgeous.

Al

Mind you if Lekky reports back that the Desire is just too good to pass up I'll probably change my mind....again!

Much better than the Hero, but that's not hard, my old N95 camera was better than the Hero's one. The camera was one of the Hero's weak points, on the N1/Desire it's much better but still not as good as a dedicated compact camera. I'd say the hardware is at least as good as the N95 camera, and it's all much quicker to react. The "flash" is OK, I just tried taking a picture inside at night under artificial light, it came out quite well, where the Hero would be largely useless. So yes, camera is a great improvement.

I'm confused Al. I'm on Orange and they've never allowed me to change phones unless I'm starting another contract with them, and even then I'm limited to what phones I can have. Are you due to renew your contract or has yours expired a while ago and they're trying to get you to take out another contract?

I've been having connection problems with my Hero, they've just replaced the phone for the second time. I can walk away from my contract because of this and keep the phone(and a bit of cash)or wait until the 7th and try out a Legend or Desire on my current contract all free of charge.

BUT if I do that and I'm still having connection problems then tough luck I'm stuck with Orange until my contract ends. Which would probably mean unlocking the phone and paying 2 contracts for a year or so.

Orange have bent over backwards trying to help me, I'm a business customer so I think they are trying to keep me sweet in case I pass on more business customers to them.

I'm dying to find out how lekky is getting on with the Desire, I knew the screen was better looking but I'd love a 5000 word review ;):D

Cheers Al

I just want a. camera that focuses and a flash... how's the camera?

Yep, its a lot better than the hero. The camera software is much upgraded and it feels more like a "real" camera than it ever did on the hero. Now bear in mind i'm not sure if this will come to the hero with 2.1 though.

It has a flash, and so makes it immediately infinitely better in fully dark conditions, and remembering that the hero is pretty poor even in fairly low light conditions, the flash makes this a non-issue.

Anyone thinking of upgrading, using base price of
