It's an insane request, but it's driving me nuts...

... can you guys do me a favor and remove your battery cover and just... sorta smell your phone?

There's an odd potpourri-like smell to my phone that I noticed a couple weeks back and it's still there. I haven't spilled anything on the phone. Everyone else can smell it so I'm not crazy. So, does anyone else's phone have a smell inside of it? It's... flowery, or organic... it's not at all unpleasant. It's just freaking odd.

This is not a complaint. This is just me trying to maintain some sort of grasp onto my sanity.

Mine smells like normal electronics. I felt like a jacka** smelling it though.

SPECIFICALLY with a title that includes the words "insane request."

lol, that's pretty much how I feel it's going to be for everyone who decides to check. I think the vast majority are going to go like this:

"What? That's ****ing insane. I'm not going to do that!" looks around, looks at phone. "It's a trick. He just wants to make me do something stupid. I refuse! But... but what if... " looks back at phone, looks around, shakes head and laughs. But the feeling lingers... what if?

    waits...

Finally alone! Grabs phone, gets up, locks door, draws the blinds, turns picture of father on dresser around so he cant see, listens for any coming footsteps, heart races, slides lock down, pulls the battery cover off... hesitates ("Am I really going to do this?") leans forward slowly and inhales...

Outcome A: No smell : FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...

Outcome B: Smell: WTF! Get out of my head!

HOLY CRAP you're right! I'm dead serious. It kind of smells like I spilled a rum and coke on my phone and it dried... Or kind of like a mix of Blistex and flowers... It's weird!

I would have never have tried this if it weren't for this post. Thank you, stranger.

Could be the battery... At least with LiPo, some people describe it as kind of a sweet scent when punctured. But maybe it's just that leftover factory smell... :p

By the way I am ENTIRELY serious here. This isn't a joke or troll thread. And yes, while the smell isn't bad, I am curious if it's a chemical signature of an electrical problem that's occurred in the hardware. You'd expect a nasty smell from a fried chip or electrical short, but since it's "nice" it's somewhat mind blowing.

My phone functions fine. I mean sure I have some problems but nothing that hints at failing hardware.

Exchange it. Better yet, call Samsung first to hear the following script:

    - I've never heard of that.
    - What did you eat for breakfast?
    - Perform a factory reset.

  19. I'd try another battery, if one for the same device were available (not having to purchase for that purpose.. yet).

I'd also see if the odor became stronger with the device's cable plugged in to a wall outlet. If so, I'd unplug and head to the store where I bought it.

It's going to be hard to gage "stronger" as it's a very unique and very present smell. As soon as I sniff near my phone with the cover removed it overwhelms me. But I plugged it in and will check in like ten minutes.

  23. I'd take the battery cover off while it's charging, just in case there is a heat or other issue. In addition, I'd lay the phone battery up, not down on any surface, again, just to play it safe.

K, so I charged it since my last post and no increase in smell. Keep in mind this smell has been here for a while and I charge near daily.

  25. I gather you've not detected an odor, such as the one you're describing, in other devices you've owned (assuming this is not your first such device).

I confess to being sensitive to dangerous odors, having been in broadcast electronics most of my working life (the guy who sets up and maintains tv and radio transmitter equipment, towers and all).

The common odors coming from a new hand held device, with a new battery, do seem "plasticky" and a bit "electrical" in nature, but usually wear off with time and especially with battery cover removals and a bit of cleaning now and then.

You might try taking an alcohol wipe to the battery compartment and the battery itself in an effort to quicken the wearing off process.
