Just disable your notifications in the one you don't want to use.

As I understand it, even when using handcent, the stock SMS app is the one doing all the work behind the scenes. Disabling it will screw up your phone.

    Nick's advice is spot on.

If you go into the stock app and hit menu > settings, there should be an option to enable/disable notifcatons.

I'd be more specific but I'm not familiar with your phone's interface.

    Thanks, that did the trick.

Also it will ask you if you want to make Handcent default, make it the default.

Once you do this reboot the phone and next SMS you get it should only launch HC. Unless you manually launch "Messaging"

I accidentally removed stock app without backing it up. Is there a way to get it back. I did a restore from factory and that didn't work. Can somebody help please, cause I cant send or receive pic messages.

I dont know how to answer your problems except to maybe get your phone rooted and load Icarus, i dont know, maybe a different rom will have the messaging app included in its software, again i'm not sure.

The only way I know of to get it back is to reflash your phone to stock. You can do that by following the directions here at xda:

Huawei Ascend - Flash Back to Stock - xda-developers

Be sure to follow the directions for the carrier you have...if you have Metro go with the first flash post.

If you have Cricket...scroll down until you see the directions.

It could be worth trying taking the messaging.apk from a firmware file, such as Icarus, and pushing it via ADB to /System/App/ (or wherever it's stored on your phone normally). It would be quicker than reflashing at least.

    Hi Xyro! :)

Yeah, I think you're right. He could try the following:

    How to install apk files!

How to Install APK files on your Android Phone

Android is one of the most promising mobile platforms currently available on the market. More than 100 new Android smartphones are expected in the coming year. Here's a list of the Top 10 Android Smartphones. One of the best features of the Android OS is the availability of third party applications.
There are two ways to install third party applications on your Android based phones:

    • The first way is by installing applications through the online Android Market, which we have already covered.
    • The second way is to manually install APK applications developed using the Android SDK on your Android phone.
APK applications are basically Android package applications.
Check out this basic tutorial on How To Install Apps and Games on Android.

    Through the Android Market

To install APK applications on your Android phone do the following:

    1. Copy the APK file you want to install to your phone's memory card and insert the card into your Android phone.
    2. Go to Android Market and search for the Apps Installer, App Installer, z-App Installer or Fast Installer application.
    3. Open it and click on the Install button.
    4. After it is installed, just open it. It will show you all the APK files stored directly in the root directory of your memory card.
    5. Just click on the application you want to install and it will be installed.
You could also just install a file manager app like Astro File Manager and then browse to the APK and install it.

    Using the Android SDK

There is one more method that can be used, you can install APK files into your phone using the Android SDK. Download the Android SDK.
First of all, install the Android SDK on your computer. You will also need to install the Android USB drivers to connect the SDK to your phone via USB. You can download it from here - Google USB Driver | Android Developers .
To install applications from other sources, you also need go to Settings -> Application Settings and enable Unknown Sources. Also go to Settings -> SD Card and Phone Storage -> Disable Use for USB Storage. You can enable it again later.
Next, just open Command Prompt and type: adb install path/file.apk
Where path is the full path to the APK file and file is the name of the APK application file. Your application is now installed. This is all you need to do, now just open the application on your phone and use it.

Should I send this to my sd card and then open with installer?

It's worth a shot, but I suspect it needs to go back in /system/app/ rather than being installed like a normal .apk. That would require option 3 from Jazziette's post.

Hey BBWJC....just exactly what did you do? You shouldn't have had to "put everything back on". I'm confused. LOL

We need to know what you did to get it back because that is how we all learn...by sharing.

    :)

Really, really glad you got it back.

I just d/l the MMS file myself, not that I needed it,but to prove a point. If you ask for help,& then don't have the trust or confidence to accept the help from those gracious enough to take the time & effort to help you, then why are you even posting in this forum in the first place?

I'm sorry I didn't get back around to answering the question but I wasn't here. Kolio I was doing as Jazz told and I appreciate all the help she gave me. Thank you very much. Jazz all i did was go thru the SD card upgrade and accepted the update and everything just came back. I did the smart thing this time around though when I got titanium I back everything up and them removed things that I didn't want
