Just got a Droid 2 Global, need some help

Hey guys

I just got a droid 2 global. Had an iPhone for over a year, so this is pretty different. I have a few questions

Can I do custom ringtones if I load MP3's onto the phone?

How can I make it so when I get a text message, it displays somewhere on my home screen? Right now I have a text message icon, but in order to see if I have a new text, I have to open it. Theres no icon or text preview.

What are some good utility apps? Ways to save battery and the like.

1. Yes. Put the MP3's on your SD card in a folder called ringtones

2. Download an app like handcent sms

Last night, my phone just shut itself off in the middle of the night. Any ideas why this happened?

Also, I was once at a screen that let me change how hard or soft the phone vibrates. How do I get back there?
