have you flashed a custom rom or are still running stock? most custom rom's, if not all, have the most current updates...

wireless tether for root users... you can download this free app in the market...
[Guide] Internet Tethering w/ Evo - 4G/3G, Wireless/Wired
some custom rom's have the sprint hotspot hacked... check their log....

edit - and if you haven't chosen a recovery, may i suggest
[Recovery] [28-August-2010] RA-evo-v1.8.0 - xda-developers
most stable, reliable IMHO

that really depends on how current your phone is. when did you purchase your phone? have you done the last ota? what is your hboot, radio, nv, pri, and software(they can be found in phone settings/about phone). just post what is says there.

also as far as future updates(ota), do not update your phone. for one you have a custom recovery now and that prevents your phone from updating anyways. but if you do do the ota (the only way really is to unroot and accept the ota), you will most likely lose your ability to re-root. as ota's usually will find the exploit that we are using now to root and seal it. it may take the devs awhile to figure out a new exploit to root.

so if there is a new ota, just wait. the devs usually get hold of leaked versions before they come out officially. like the new sense 3.0 is now out and there are some roms in beta's that have gingerbread and sense working sort of. it is still in beta's so they are a bit buggy.
