Hi. This is my first post. I just got a brand new Droid 2. I am confused as to why the KB lights dont light up and the 4 buttons at the bottom of the screen dont light up. Is it a setting somewhere?

    Thx

There is no setting. On mine when it doesn't light up I can either adjust the brightness or turn the screen off and on and it works again.

Ok so this is normal for those things to not light up sometimes? like a bug? I am wondering now if I should return it.

    Thx!

If the lights come on after doing as I suggested, there is no reason to return it, if they never come on, then I'd take it back.

Gotcha. Thx for the quick response! I just tried pushing on off button to put it in sleep then pushed it again to make it come on. Everything lighted up. cool. Weord thing is I had just turnd it on since I just got up. So it was a fresh boot. I wonder how many people experience this?

Rebooting the phone seems to turn the lights off because every reboot I must turn off screen and turn back on for the lights to light up

yes after reboot the lights won't work for a few minutes as the phone gets all the background services running.

Think there is a sensor at the top left portion of the phone. Try covering it up, that will light up the buttons at the bottom. I wish there was a way to adjust this, IMO I don't need it unless it is pitch black.

as noted above, whenever the phone is rebooted the keyboard and home screen buttons will not light up until you lock and unlock the screen. After that you are good to go until the next reboot.

As somoene CORRECTLY mentioned above, sometimes the Keyboard and Home Buttons do not light up after a reboot.

This is a KNOWN ISSUE and the lights can be restored by doing the following:

Settings - Display - Brightness - Turn OFF Automatic Brightness and Manually adjust the brightness level.

This should restore all KB and Home button lights. You can then re-enable the Automatic Brightness setting if you want.

That might work but simpling turning the screen off and on with the power button is way quicker and simpler

I've had this problem as well. If you close the key board and hit the sleep key and open it a few times the keys should light back up. Works for my phone.

Download a free app called Droid Light. Run it, then turn the flash light off and exit the app. The lights should turn on and stay on for a while after use.

boy.. after reading these 'fixes' it makes me realize that I am going with an iPhone next. That you have to do this kinda stuff just to get the basic functionality of the phone back-lighting to work? yeesh. Who needs it.

I wouldn't go to iPhone after a few people had problems. I haven't had any problems with my KB and home buttons lighting up. If you are considering iPhone after something small as this, you must not like Android very much. I know if I were to go to an iPhone, I would miss Android right away.
