Is there any way to stop Google Maps going 'idle' when it isn't in the foreground?

It's particularly annoying if i'm on, say my bike with my phone in my pocket, and every time I need to check where I am I have to wait for it to update my position which it occasionally gets stuck doing and I have to wait 30 seconds plus to find where I am.

Free Waze doesn't go 'idle'.
(It's also an excellent 'crowd sourced' navigation app; recommended).

The flip side of apps not being allowed to go idle is that they will bleed your battery dry in no time at all.
So if you go biking with a map app on a lot I would see if I could mount a charger connected to a solar panel or to the dynamo (and a converter/transformer) on my bike!

I use a Tasker profile to keep screen on when running Maps (and a few other apps), but as AlvarezLuis says you take a hit with power consumption.

My Tracks might keep Maps on track but the latest comments don't look good.

Sorry, I'm not into biking.
I would check out big (online?) bike accessory stores.

For hiking and biking I use a mobile charger (battery pack): Anker 5600mAh.

Its charges my HTC One X about two times ... enough to run my navigation app (BackCountry Navigator) for a full day

Ooooo. Anker even has an 8400 mAh battery. Now if I could figure out how to convert 0-12 vac to 5 vdc I could have a serious charging station on my bike.

Instead of a dynamo on your wheel you could also mount a wind turbine on your helmet!

When cycling I carry a battery pack. There are many and its weight is unnoticable.
