Keeping messenger connected and updated

I know this has been asked a million times but are there any messenger apps that will keep you connected and updated when you get IMs. I'm currently using the trillian beta and it works great, but I have to open the app to see if I have new messages. I have tried eBuddy and MSN Talk, but no luck.
