    Can this be done?
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, but it may be an Android problem, I'm not entirely sure.
Is there a way I can switch off the visible SMS notification in the top bar of the screen but still get a message sound when one arrives?
So sound only, with no onscreen notification? You know, like the old days? ;)
I can only find the option in message settings to turn off notifications, but that also turns off the message tone which I don't want to happen.
Is there a setting I've missed, or an app that'll do it?

menu-settings-privacy, i think that's where it's at. If not, there may be a setting somewhere in the Messaging app.

Nope, there's nothing in the Privacy option for this.

    :(

Not sure why you'd want to turn it off, but assuming you are still using stock TouchWiz messenger from Samsung (most experienced android use Go SMS or Handcent or Chomp SMS instead of stock messengers):

Open SMS app>menu button>Settings>Notifications (uncheck this).

Because I don't like people seeing my messages when my phone's sitting on the table. I still want it to beep and vibrate like every other phone I've had though.

Unchecking Notifications turns off the sound and vibrate as well.
I tried Handcent earlier but it turns everything off too.

If you disable notifications in the stock app, there's an app called SMS Popup which will handle SMS notifications for you. I think there's an option in there to disable the onscreen notifications whilst keeping the notification tone and vibrate active.

Ah, I've forgotten it shows message contents there too.

Well thats the only way you can stop it. Anyway, if you use handcent or Go, what you do is NOT TO TURN OFF notifications. You go to Notification settings and make it use privacy mode. You'd still get the notification in the notification bar, but instead of showing what your message content is, Its only going to say "New Message", and will also not name the sender.

If you disable notifications within the app, you could have Tasker play a notification sound or vibrate (or both) when a new SMS arrives, without having anything appear in the notification bar.

I wouldn't buy Tasker just for this, but if you have it anyway, this would be a way to accomplish your goal.
