Kindle the app? Or Kindle the Kindle?

For the app, the only way is to buy them from amazon. If you want to put your own ebooks on then, in epub format for example, you need to download Aldiko.

Ok, you cannot put your own books onto the Kindle app, you need Aldiko. You need to download Calibre on your computer, convert your ebooks to epub format. Then connect your phone to your computer with the usb cable, and put the files on the sd card.

I already told you, Calibre on the computer, convert the books, then install Aldiko on the phone.

    Only to round out :)

If you own .mobi eBooks then you can import these on the Kindle app.
Put them in the folder "kindle" on the root of your phone's SD card and you'll able to read them with the Kindle app.

Only the 'Whisper Sync' with the Amazon server doesn't work with this kind of imported eBooks.
