I've had my S3 for about a month and am loving most of it. I'd like the picture messaging slideshow thing to be fixed asap but that's a whole different thread.

Anyways, I've noticed my S3 is lagging when backing out of apps, switching to homescreen, opening apps and even the swipe to unlock lags sometimes. As of right now I'm using 551 MB of ram with 1.16 GB free...is that normal? Should I stop some of these processes running that I'm not even using? (Score mobile or Maps for example)

    Thanks y'all.

1.16GB free RAM is absolutely fine, don't worry about that.

It could be that you have an app that's causing your CPU to run at full speed for some reason. Your phone could also slow down if you have a lot of apps that run in the background.

Don't stop the processes using a task killer, it's better to completely uninstall apps if you don't use them.

If all else fails, a factory reset might help :)

Makes sense...I'm wondering how to check to see if I have an app that's causing my CPU to run at full speed?

Also, is it normal for "maps" to have 2 separate entries using 8mb and 10mb as well as "Play Store" using 10mb and "ScoreMobile" using 10mb? I know that's not a lot but I'm not sure why they're even there.

I also close apps, and only ever have messages/email open at any given time.

I'm not sure if it's possible to check that.

I wouldn't close apps though, that could actually be what's causing your problem. Android manages tasks very well on its' own without any interference from the user.

Try not closing tasks for a while and just letting the phone do its' thing, see if that helps. I would reboot the phone too.

Sorry, to be clear I'm not closing Tasks, I'm closing applications once I'm finished using them (like facebook, or the browser etc.) I've never "stopped a service" through the Applications Manager.

The lag when backing out of apps is caused by S voice so just go into s voice> settings> Launch S voice. And just disable it. There will be no more lag when leaving apps :D It was one of the first things I did when I received my S3.

Already did that too! I understand this was a lag induced by pressing the home button once (and the S3 waiting for a potential double press to launch S voice). I'm referring to the back button, backing out of a message conversation to the messages list etc.

u can download betterbatterystats off play store to see what apps are keeping your cpu busy

What I mean is, pressing the back or home buttons to leave those applications is fine, but if you're using the task manager (long press home button and then tap on task manager), that can cause problems.
