Ive got a sim free desire from cpw, currently with an o2 sim card in it and totally stock. I see theres an update available, but wanted to know if it was worth it. I dont think ill be effected by the loss of wifi issue that many report, but have read a couple of issues. One is better reception of the phone signal, and less jumping around between H and 2g, but i hear the update leads to more time on 2g and less on H? Well if thats the case that aint good. My phone signal dont jump around. I get plenty of H where I am. Also since doing a couple tricks that I found on here, I hardly ever loose data connection now. Maybe once in a few weeks which aint that much of an issue.
So anyone else holding back from the upgrade? Bootloader .80? Hmmmm dilemma when my phone is just fine as is.
Does the upgrade, truly give better reception, not harm battery, or slow the device down which is what ive read?

it certainly has given me no problems (open unbranded), everything works well and it seems smoother all round.

I have an HTC desire bought from CPW (unlocked + unbranded) and got O2 sim (like you). . . I didn't notice any problems after the Update though.

It's almost always better to update, only individual circumstances is it not. I don't think you meet those so I would say update if i were you :p

I've not updated, not had any problems or real reason to and don't like the idea that WiFi may abscond as my phone is running great, plus as you mention the bootloader update even thought I havn't rooted it or don't really intend to at the moment I like to keep my options open.

Ok thanks, ive read a couple people say of slow downs, or battery down. But the majority say its good. Im of the impression that once you go to 80, theres no going back to unroot? So if I update now, then root, my warranty is out the window? Or am I confused!?! Im watching htc at the moment waiting for 2.2 like everyone else, if they dont release soon, ill get it via modaco. And if something goes wrong with my phone I can return it to stock?

lastly, is it just as easy to get the rom with the updated radio update as it is to get the ota update? As mentioned my phone is totally stock, never been updated so presumably no need for gold card.?

I have an unlocked standard HTC Desire A8181 on 3 which I updated to 1.21.405.2 yesterday. No problems. All works as before but Youtube widget is now v1.6.20 (E). Running Quadrant Standard benchmark app from marketplace shows performance rating of 521 (base Desire 500) putting it above HTC Incredible but way below Nexus One with 2.2 which is >1250.

I have read of problems with the GPS after updating but on checking my phone I still get a positive GPS location within about 7 seconds so no problem for my unbranded generic Desire model A8181. One problem I do have in common with others is that my Facebook friend stream seems to have dried up. Tried deleting the account and reinputting but still the same. I onlyget my own updates now.

try removing the app from the screen, then longpress and reselect it
  12. I'm a bit wary of updating purely because of the GPS issues which have been reported. I have an unbranded handset on 3 and have never had any problems with it. I'm always of the 'if it aint broke....' opinion so could anyone say what benefit I would have in updating?

I've read about YouTube being updated with HQ option but mine has that anyway..?!? Do folk mean HD instead of HQ..?

Not noticed any difference since updating. unlocked cpw using 3 sim

nope its just HQ, so i think they removed HD option which was available by going into menu and choosing HD.
and regarding GPS oh well... its not really an issue i just think its just a bit worsened compared to superfast fix that i had before and GPS looks a bit weaker as it barelly gets a fix at home, whereasm it used to get pretty easily before.
although cant tell it how much it changed as havent done any test before update or now. just from general usage it feels different and less accurate
and one more thing i saw after update - check your alarm clock :) now its animated or it always was? as i never noticed that as used to switch it of being sleeppy hehe

Well thanks for the replies. I went for the update in the end. It went well. Overall slightly disappointed I have to say.
Mainly I read on several posts that the update would give a big internal free memory boost. Mine was 70 meg before the update and 70 meg after the update! Very annoying! This was the main reason I updated!

Battery goes from 100 to 93 percent within seconds of taking it off a full charge, regardless of what you do, it happens. Doesn't appear to ber made up elsewhere.

No other issues though. Facebook is better. No issues for me on gps. Good quick lock on, although I haven't tried it yet on navigation.

Youtube is good with high quality videos, but you could have got those anyway. Teeny teeny teeny audio sync issues still exists on many videos. Hardly noticeable, really, but annoying once you do notice it!

If your waiting for the update still, please consider this. The battery dropping seems to effect many people but not everyone. Theres posts on it at xda. Some people are claiming gps lag?
These I believe seem to be more than just a couple of isolated incidents.

Also and mainly, I hope someone will correct me if im wrong here. If you update, your bootloader updates to a new version. Once you do this, theres currently no way of going back. So if you get fed up of waiting for the official froyo, and decide to root and flash a new rom, htc will be able to tell you've been tinkering with your device as theres no way currently of getting it back to 0.75 bootloader once you've rooted it. If your on 0.75, you can reset your phone to pretty much stock condition as it was when you bought it. But the update to 0.80 is not currently able to do this. Now as mentioned, please someone correct me if im wrong! Im no expert at all. Just waiting for froyo the same as everyone! But now if i get fed up of waiting for froyo 2.2 the moment I root, theres no unrooting! Not for me, or anyone else whos updated?!!!
