Instead of the default apps (such as gmail or text messaging), I use k-9 mail and handcent and as such, have gmail set to not receive email, and text messaging to not use notifications.

Is there any way to have LP show unread mail or messages with non-standard apps? If so, how?

    Thanks.

From the Home Screen, hit the hard menu button>Preferences>Dock Settings> Select Missed Call, SMS, and/or Gmail count and they shud appear.

I use Handcent and DialerOne, and I get all notifications on my dock bar.

I have them all enabled, admittedly I have only been able to test the gmail count on my own which doesn't seem to work with k-9 mail (unless I have something wrong). Did you change the action of the buttons at all, or leave them set for the normal action then just set handcent and dialerone as your default apps for that action?

Again, the only thing I have tested on my own is the gmail count and it doesn't seem to work with k-9 mail, it would make sense but I'm wondering if theres any workaround.

EDIT: Okay, it does seem to work for texts (and calls I assume), any way to make the gmail count work without using gmail as the app to use for email?

Not sure. I have a Handcent icon in my dock and the swipe gesture takes me to my email...default is Hotmail. Besides, both text and emails pop in my notification bar so I know I have stuff to look at.

I am working on theming my phone a bit (more-so customizing not full-on theming) and trying to clean up my homescreens the best I can (such as removing labels from icons and what not). I have eliminated a few icons on all my homescreens and as such am trying to get rid of the notification bar. I still see the bar when I unlock the phone, which tells me how many unread emails or texts I have, but if I am using my phone at the time of the email, or if I ignore the notification bar before I unlock the phone, I have no way of seeing how many emails I have.

Not a major issue as 9 times out of 10 I check my email regardless of how many I have, but it would be nice if it was more consistent down my in dock.

This doesn't necessarily help your specific need but I figure I might has well tell you just in case it helps. I personally have my notification bar hidden because I don't like it taking up screen real estate. Like you mentioned, you do see it briefly when unlocking the phone but if I want to see the notification bar after it's unlocked and hidden, I have added a swipe gesture (using launcher pro) to my email icon on the dock which drops down the notification bar.

Being that you the k-9 app coincides with LP, I was wondering if there was a way to also have your other email accounts set for notifications on the dock.

Would be nice for twitter and facebook as well, being that these are all default dock icons.

    Thanks
