wow someone didn't think that one through. i'm glad they got the hell sued out of them..maybe it'll set an example to other institutions out there that still practice this kind of bigotry
Good for her and anyone else that follows in her footsteps.
How astute of you, she is gay. Also, women who are gay are more commonly referred to as lesbians. I am sure that you were just pointing out to others that may not understand the story that Ms. McMillen was in fact gay and not trying to use the term in any negative way about the thread, right?
Both sides of this case were wrong. The parents, students, and school for putting on a separate prom, and the girl because she does exactly what gay people always do: draw unnecessary attention to themselves.
If stupid people can draw attention to themselves, why not homosexuals?
honestly if the school hadnt reacted in a completely prejudicial way there would have been no reaction from the girl, the school gets what it deserves. i dont think she should be given some absurd amount though, lawsuits are most often equally ridiculous but sometimes if you hit people where it hurts the most (pocketbook) they might learn a thing or two.
I suppose the better question is: If stupid people do it why would you?
If I feel that there's a principal or cause that I believe in being attacked, I am more than happy to draw attention to my support of that cause or principle.
For this reason I do not believe that drawing attention for positive, fair-minded and just reasons is unnecessary; far from it I believe that we should all draw attention to those doing things so blatantly wrong and or misguided.
Would you not agree, or do you think it would be better to never speak out when evil is being done, for fear of drawing attention?
This has got to be the most ass backwards thinking I've seen on these forums.
Grow up son.
Which is probably why homosexuality gets such a strong responce....to some it's just wrong. I personally think sex belongs in the bedroom...and not in a parade.
You can't tell him to grow up because of an opinion! Maybe you need to get a grip and realize you're not the only one with an opinion?
The school should be allowed to do what it wants. I'm sick of scumbags suing because their feelings were hurt and calling it emotional distress and an infringement of rights or discrimination.
I hope the school appeals and this b*tch loses! She doesn't deserve the money. She just used up her 15 minutes of fame.
Damn. I've been to any number of parades for any number of causes in my lifetime, and I've never seen sex in a parade.
Please alert us when you see it happen again...and remember, without photos, such comments are...worthless.
But it isn't, so that's kind of why I'm saying it's stupid to discriminate against people who're homosexual.
That's lovely, but irrelevant in this instance. I don't believe Ms McMillen was prevented from the event due to her planning to have sex with her partner. In fact I'm pretty sure if you barred all the people who *might* have sex at a prom from attending then many proms would be ill-attended.
You are half right. But for homosexuals to have the right to what they want to do in the bedroom, they have to do the parades and file these lawsuits to bring attention to the whole thing. If you think things will change if nobody does anything or brings issues to the front, then blacks would still be drinking from seperate water fountains. What that school and those families did to that girl was totally wrong, and it needed to be brought to the forefront. This was far from unnecessary attention.
Why is this young lady a 'scumbag' and 'bitch'? Have you formed this opinion with any thought process, or just some form of pure hatred of her because she's either a)homosexual or b)litigious?
If you think the school should be allowed to do what it likes, should it be allowed to exclude students with learning difficulties, those students in wheelchairs, ugly students, Asians, Texans, those with dark hair etc. etc.?
This drivel is not even worth responding. I suggest you seek help.
1. Public schools are not allowed to do what they want. They have to follow laws, rules, regulations, et cetera.
2. There's no evidence the young lady under discussion is a "scumbag" (I won't bother to explain what that would be unlikely, literally) or any sort of low life. She just happens to have a same-sex gender orientation.
3. Her rights were infringted.
4. In this country, if your rights are infringed and a court verifies it, you may be entitled to a settlement of some sort. A financial settlement is typical.
This thread is why I post very few follow ups....reasoning> out the window.
Glad she won.
I am so glad I live in a country that you can be what you want. The school district is full of a bunch of morons. She has the right to be what she wants, spent 24 years fighting for that and damn proud of it.
As far as seeing sex in a parade, you need to hit the parade in the Village on Gay Pride Day believe me you will get an eye full.
She did it for the money, period. I can't believe some of you are giving her props. No wonder this country is on a downward spiral! Not worth arguing.
Shame, we need more reasonable people posting, you insights would obviously be brilliant.
Any proof of this accusation?
I'd be supporting her, or anybody in a similar position, whether the court ruled to award financial damages, or some other form of damages.
I'd be intrigued to hear how you would award damages other than financially in this sort of case; or are you saying people shouldn't have the right to take any form of civil action over such things as discrimination, libel or deformation?
On what do you base your opinon that "She did it for the money, period."
This country is on a downward spiral because of corporate greed, not because it is extending rights to folks who don't meet your approval.
To say that a young woman wanted to go her highschool prom just to cause trouble is BS, i bet that an overwhelming majority of high school females dream about the perfect prom and dressing up for such a night.
Then when this "dream" got denied to go with her girlfriend just because they were the same sex, she was pissed and wanted some sort of action taken to make sure it didn't happen more.
She was the one that was wronged so yeah she is entitled to the money.
As for those of you who are to closed minded to see that everyone deserves the same rights as everyone else you can go move to some communist country and just have fun hating on people just cause they are different
