GNU/Linux is a kernel, basically the guts of an operating system. It is not a complete operating system on it's own. Their are many 'distributions' of Linux which are complete operating systems. A very good one for people starting out in the world of Linux is Ubuntu.

It is not only for businesses. It's main use is in webservers (80% of the worlds webservers run Linux). It is slowly becoming an alternative to MS Windows or MacOS for personal computers. Oh and Android is a Linux distribution.

The main reason people choose it over MS Windows or MacOS is stability and customization. It is incredibly stable because of it's Unix background which is why it's the choice for webservers which need as close as possible to 100% uptime. It's very customizable because it is Open Source so you have the right to change it however you want.

Best part is it's a free OS. Most varieties of it are at least. Ubuntu is a good one.
