Like typing ":)" = [IMG] on the screen and to other droid users

Back on Stock Froyo as of this morning...where those a part of a theme (NexTheme)?

i know those are in the nextheme and other themes, however, i'm unsure if they're custom or stock. you can always add them into your stock theme with root.

Reinstalled NexTheme for Froyo...still not there. I might flash a nandroid or 2 so I can see when I lost them.

They were stock for me. Usually came up in the gtalk app.

They do not show up as actual droids for me until I send the text, this may be how it works for you also.

    so confused...
Just went through all my nandroids and it seems to stem back to my original that I made just after rooting before any themeing or roming.

10/16 Froyo, no theme, no rom, data up to 10/16 (they don't work)
10/22 ApeX only, wiped data (don't know if they work, no texts...but I assume they do)
11/20 ApeX with NexTheme, data up to 11/20 (they work)
11/30 ApeX with NexTheme, data up to 11/30 (they work)
12/1 ApeX with NexTheme, data up to 12/1 (they work)
12/3 ApeX with Christmas Theme, data up to 12/3 (they work)
12/7 ApeX 1.2 with NexTheme, data up to 11/20 (they work)
12/8 v1 Flashed back to Froyo only using 10/16 then applied current user data from 12/7 (they don't work)
12/8 v2 Used v1 above and with NexTheme for Froyo (they don't work)

So either something was corrupt with my 10/16 nandroid or something with the themes/roms won't allow me to go back to it without loss? Could something have been removed from a rom/theme that wouldn't comeback with a nandroid? Is there a better way to wipe roms/themes from the phone that doesn't lose current data?

Does any of that make any sense?

The motorola text app doesn't have them, the aosp one does. Which one are you using?

    Well...winner winner chicken dinner.
That makes some sense since the ones that don't work are on Froyo and the ones that do are on ApeX.

But...my wife's stock Droid 2 Global has them as well as my buddy's stock Incredible. Does the original Droid have them? Was the X deprived? So I need to install a different app to get them back or get my rear back on a ROM?

Can anyone else confirm this? I could have sworn I had the droid dudes before I went the root route.

My son and I just got our X's on the 30th and we found the little droid dudes under the smiley button but they do not show up in our texts before or after we send, also they do not appear in our received texts. I had the incredible before this and it had them. I gave that to my daughter who had the moto droid, she DID have them in her moto droid. Why aren't they in the X and how did anyone else fix this?

Fab lets you choose between the two in ApeX. In terminal emulator you just do
    Code (Text):
    1. messaging -aosp
to get the AOSP messaging app.

+1 ^^ my favorite part about ApeX.

Too bad I can't decide whether or not I like moto or aosp messaging better.

    D'oh!

    Go back to ApeX :p

Seriously, though, anyone with ApeX should be able to send you their AOSP messaging APK. I'd do it but I'm at work right now, if you PM me your email address, I'll do it tonight when I get home.

Anyone with any AOSP ROM should be able to send you the APK, actually.

Edit....Hmmmm, now how do I install it or remove the OG messaging so it will install?

    - use a root file browser, rename Messaging.apk in /system/app to something that's not .apk
    - copy Mms.apk to /system/app
    - change the permissions (long press on the APK) to be what the rest of the .apks in that folder have (can't remember off the top of my head)
    - then reboot (or use a terminal emulator to gain root permissions and type "sync").

Alright, I admit it...I'm still stuck over here.
I've tried renaming and moving the two files with astro and file manager and neither of them will allow me the permission to do it. (both are free versions). How do I get permission to modify in /system/app???

I don't think either Astro or the built in file manager will do superuser stuff. You need something like Root Explorer. There are free root browsers, I believe.

You can do it via the command line... either from ADB on the computer or in a terminal emulator.

    su
    mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
    busybox cp /sdcard/"$1" /system/app/"$1"
    chmod 755 /system/app/"$1"
    sync
    mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system

Replace $1 with the app name (Mms.apk) and that is assuming the app is in the root of your sd card.
