I'm at the beginning of an idea. I'm a green campaigner with only an outline understanding of programming possibilities (I run some websites).

I want to connect a lot of campaigns for local food by creating both a website and an app through which - (a) by gps or other geolocation or (b) by entering postcode or town - a user could connect to their local campaign; find local farmers markets, retailers, food co-ops and restaurants that specialise in local food.

I'm at the stage of trying to assess how hard this would be and how much it would cost (I'm a volunteer in this, I don't want to make any money).

I presume technically this is not complex, but wd involve developing in parallel in java for an app and in say php for the website, and wd involve a lot of drudge-person-hours in creating the database.

Feedback, explanations of where I'm going wrong, thoughts welcome.

    Hello!

    Sounds like a fun idea!

The android app part of is not very complex at all. The simplest way would be to have a app with a menu that says "Find farms", "Find restaurants", "Find whatever..." and when the user clicks it opens up the Google Maps App with the right points plotted, and centered on your location. That is easy. Or, for more customization, you could use your own MapView inside your app (not using Google Maps App), that's a bit more complicated, but still easy.

    2. Hello, MapView | Android Developers

The map would load a KML file (XML of your locations) from your webserver, that generates them from the database. Also not a hard task.

This approach would take maximum a week for anyone that has been doing a little bit of android apps and a little bit of PHP. Faster, of course, for more experienced coders.

Then there is the website, also not hard, but depends a lot on what you want. Functionality and design and such.
