Help Locked out grid password

Hello all
Im new to the forum and I just bought a used Samsung Captivate and the previous owner did not reset the phone prior to sale. I cant get passed the initial grid-dot password. Is there any way to get around that, do some kind of reset?

Well I know if you keep trying the grid it will eventually ask if you want to send the answer to the gmail account on the phone. I assume that wont help. Why dont you just call the previous owner assuming you got it legally.

I forgot mine and went to the tmobile store and they reset to any combo grid. I cannot forget it anymore
