Help Lockscreen notification

I have noticed that if you have swipe to unlock you can preview your notifications while your phone is locked in the status bar, but if you have any kind of pattern or pin to unlock you cannot, is there any way to have a secure unlock and still preview your messages? I've looked through the forum and on Google but haven't had any luck, any help would be appreciated.
