Looking for a free international texting app. 24sms irritates me since every time I get a regular text from anyone this app opens as well. I dont need that. I have the whatsapp app and it works perfectly. But my parents do not have a smartphone and they cannot get the app.

I need to text to Cape Town South Africa for Free. It would be nice if they could reply to my message but its ok if they cant. Im am in the US.

    Thanks.

Hangouts and Skype are free, have desktop versions, cross-platform and can be used for just messaging

Hangouts is free but you need an internet connection (smart phone or Computer).

As has been mentioned a few times above, neither Skype or hangouts require a smartphone. And neither app will charge you to message.

You could use Whatsapp, it's free for the first year, then like 1.99$/y which is pretty good. The other person needs the application and it only works over wifi.

Personally I would recommend Skype. It is very easy to use and it's free. If your parents have access to a computer (with an internet connection) you can send them how many messages you want
