I have a Galaxy S5 and I have been using the Sound Recorder that came on it (I think-I don't recall downloading it) to record long sessions (over 2.5 hours, and coming up I need to record for 7 or 8 hours)

It starts off fine but after a while I think it must be saving the growing file size to card and missing half a second of audio regularly, like every few seconds.

Are there any other better apps that can work round this problem?

You can try Smart Voice Recorder.
I just use it to record voice and the quality is decent.
If you have enough budget, it is suggested to try Voice PRO, this android voice recorder comes with more features.

    thanks for the reply.
Interestingly I retried using the sound recorder already on the phone as mentioned above, but this time instead of saving to the microSD card I saved to device AND I set it to flight mode and there were no gaps in the recording at all. Much better.

I had a lot of intermittant issues with the stock voice recording app, and I tried a lot of the apps on Play Store,

this one has been rock solid for me....
I don't think I ever let it run for 2.5 hours, nope just looked, 1 hour, 11 minutes.

but that recorded flawlessly without any bumps.

I find it odd that it is now referred to as the "Samsung voice recorder"
    just looked at their website.

Yes that is interesting. Play tells me it's not compatible with my phone, Android 6 and up.
The one I have has the exact same icon though. It reports as voice recorder 2.14.03011539 and doesn't show in my downloaded list of apps so looks like it came with it, on my Samsung Galaxy S5. So sounds like same app.

Try loading it as an apk and ignore what Play store says.

it seems to be working on the Note 4 with Verizon MM

I'm pretty (99.9%) sure the app I have is the previous version (by 0.01) of that app, so I already have it really. Thanks.
