Lost contacts, only re import one at a time from sim

Last night I took my phone out of my pocket and all my contacts were gone. When I tried to import from the sim card, it would only just add one new contact each time I tried. with a message "Contacts Partially Imported". The selection also seams to be random, not alphabetical.

How can I fix this? Or if not how can i delete old, unused contacts from sim to expedite the one at a time transfer?

Also I have the screen unlock pattern set up to prevent accidental screen activity, so I don't even know how this happen.

Have you ever synced your phone with gmail? Often the phone syncs with the account when you first set it up so maybe they are online. You could also have a look within the Phonebook, tap on the three headed icon and look at the account options there.... what is ticked/unticked?

I just synced with gmail and then tried again to import and it took all contacts. Still not sure why it wouldn't before but it works now, so thank you.
