I'm having the same exact issue with my G2 (HTC Desire Z). I have checked the settings, the ringtones are activated, and whether I choose default ringtone or I choose any of the given ones, I still get no sound. It used to be that when I was going through the list, selecting a ringtone, simply clicking on the name would cause the sound to play from the speaker, it doesn't do this anymore. I've checked my phones speaker and It works fine when playing music, and the phone call ring tones work fine. It seems to be just the messaging notifications. I'm not using any app for messaging either, straight Android 2.2. Any ideas?

    Edit:
A reset did not resolve the issue. However, after plugging in the charger, the issue is resolved. Is this some sort of battery saving feature? I was very low on battery at the time I noticed the issue.

It's not a true battery saving feature, but a consequence of running some devices on a low battery; some functionality can be lost on some devices.
