LTE Video Camera Zooms in Too Much??

    Hiya...

Was not familiar enough with my un-rooted EVO LTE to recall if this was just something that happens when using the video camera or if it has to do with the Viper ROM I am using so I'm asking here...

The camera has a +/- slide to zoom the still camera. Even when I return the zoom to - for the widest angle possible, whenever I engage the video camera, the camera ZOOMS IN a little bit. Then when I stop the video, it returns to the widest angle.

Is this "just what the video camera does" or is there some setting that is causing this?? I can't figure out why this is happening or a setting that might cause it...

    Thanks!!

No ETAs, not sure on the zoom, sorry.

    Hey Early...

Were you not sure WHY the video is zooming or not sure IF the video zooms? Can you or someone try to replicate my zoom issue? Wondering if it's my own odd issue of if someone else had the same thing happening. I'm using the stock camera, nothing special...

    THANKS!

I just tried it, still running viper 2, same as you. My camera adjusts between video and camera when I switch. It seems it is just refocusing when the task is changed. I did not see any zoom action, but the refocus may seem like a slight zoom in/out.

Not sure if my camera is behaving same as yours tho.

It might be the resolution difference between the native camera and the video. I can't remember the resolution difference between the two. Maybe that's it?

    Hiya...

I've been using my LTE for a couple weeks now and noticed something with the video camera.

When I turn on the camera, I can see the amount of viewing area/frame for when I take a picture. When I take a picture, either standard 4:3 or wide angle, what I see is what I get. However, when I hit the video button, the frame zooms in kinda uncomfortably close, to the point where I have to step back, back to get most of the subject/area that I wanted to film. Hit the video camera off/stop recording and the frame returns to the area I saw before fliming.

Is this an LTE thing or a rooted thing (I'm using Viper 4G 2.0.2 ROM) or a problem with my phone/camera??

    THANKS!!

    Edit: Clarification

Left the above text AS WAS when I posted earlier today, however, did not mean for it to seem like a duplicate post asking the SAME questions. I just wanted to clarify my experience.

What I'm going to do is try to take a screenshot of BOTH the before camera/video view and the DURING VIDEO camera view to show what I am experiencing. Will post tomorrow...

Have screenshots of what I see and what is videoed on my phone...

First image is what I see (1) if I take a still picture or (2) get ready to take a video. Second image is what I see as soon as I start recording video.

Notice how the video automatically zooms in compared to the still/pre-video view:

SIGNIFICANT difference!! Does not appear to be a refocus issue as suggested by Granite1 above...definite zoom in. And QUITE annoying...was trying to take a video of the kids today. Took a still picture and was fine but then had to move WAY WAY back to get them both in frame. Actually could NOT move back far enough the get the shot...:(:(

My camera settings (generally): 5 MP, 4:3: (not wide) ratio for camera; 640 x 480 (high) video quality. I tried HD video and same zoom problem occurs. I even tried to zoom all the way in with the still +/- zoom feature and even at maximum zoom for the still, the video zooms EVEN FARTHER when recording starts...:thinking:

Camera version (from the Viper4G ROM): Camera 4.0.2218222459.437738.416687.

Maybe I'm off by a TRILLIONTH in the above camera version?? :D:D

    THOUGHTS??:(

Not your fault on the duplicate, I pulled the discussion parts out of the Viper4G thread for everyone, so that's on me, sorry.

I've duplicated your results, using a different variation of the stock camera (from MeanROM).

I don't know what this is about.

Whew!! I kinda thought I was losin' it!! :D

Ok, so it is NOT just me, huh??

So with being able to dupe my results with another ROM then this appears NOT to be ROM-specific?? Are you able to do anything or use any camera where this does NOT happen?? I'm obviously trying to avoid this... :(

    THANKS!!

There are a lot of camera apps out there, I don't where to start.

But, yeah, this is characteristic of the stock camera. No adjustments for it.

When I tried it, I was in Landscape. I never tried it in portrait.

    Trying it in portrait now....

It's doing it to me too, in both portrait and landscape.

I tried it in a small space before, I didn't notice any zooming effect. Just tried it in a larger room, it does it for me too. Sorry about that Scudder. :(

I bet it's a resolution difference between the camera and the Video.

The frame for pictures doesn't change based on resolution. Just saying...

I really don't know too much about cameras and video. I've never really got into that area of tech....yet. :p

Really have no idea why it's doing that then, that was my only idea.

Yeah, I've gone back and forth on that same idea.

It's like they're using only a section of the sensor (maybe a 1/4 of it, or half in each dimension, would give 1-to-1 pixel mapping for 2 MP video) - I'll chase that down with some measurements, but in the end it's going to come to this - that's just how they do video. :)

Interesting, because this is the first time I've seen this with various phones/manufacturers. And I've had my original EVO and didn't occur there.

Wonder why the new LTE does this and the reason for it...:thinking:

I am currently on CM10 with the 4.2 Camera.

Switching between camera and video does the same thing here. It zooms in for video compared to where the camera was.
But if I switch the Video settings from 1080 to 720 it pulls back out the little bit that it zoomed in.

Maybe try that with the Sense camera and see if that does it?

Possibly a hardware thing not a software issue?

Thanks Naters...thought it was a great idea so I went to my phone to change the settings and I was already on 720!! :D I went ahead and tried 1080 and 640 and STILL has the zoom.

As you mentioned, probably is a hardware issue and is what it is....

    THANKS!
