Root LTEVO ROOTING FOR DUMMIES {The Complete Guide}

This is the usual disclaimer:
Only you are responsible for what happens to your phone. Neither I nor AF are responsible for what happens. Please read this guide thoroughly and if you have any questions then please feel free to ask.

Before we proceed to rooting your phone, lets go into OTA's and what they are and what they mean to you. OTA stands for Over the Air updates. It is how devices receive updates to the phone. It usually contains a new hboot(more on this later), radios, kernels, and the latest software updates. It also might contain things like security updates and other fixes as well.

NEVER ACCEPT AN OTA WHILE YOU ARE ROOTED OR PLAN ON ROOTING YOUR PHONE! If you follow this rule, you will never have any issues going forward. Usually with each new OTA any exploits used to gain root will be closed and then you will have to wait for the devs to find another exploit to gain root. And by accepting an OTA while you are rooted, there is a possibility that it will unroot the phone. You will then be forced to wait for the devs to come up with another way to root it.

Fortunately, the great devs from Team Unlimted IO and others have found a way to root the latest hboots. So now we have a bunch of different ways to root the phone. I will go into detail into each methods and it will be up to you to decide how you want to root the phone.

Update:11/4/2013 I added windroid to the root method. This is a toolkit and not a method, but it can be used to unlock the bootloader, get s-off and install recovery.
Update:11/1/2013 i added in a new root method that will work on 3.17.651.4 called rumrunner. this method will give you s-off.
Update: 6/23/2013 added Facepalm and Moonshine root methods. I redid the format of the guide as well.
Update: 2/11/2013: So looks like Team Unlimited has done it once again. You guys who took the OTA can now root your phone. If you are on software version 3.16.651.3 then you can now get s-off.
Update: 01/31/2013: This is the latest update though it is a small maintenance update, it has caused quite a stir. For one Dirty Racun does not support the latest ota (3.16.651.3). The only option for those with the 3.16 OTA will need to use HTCdev and unlock the bootloader. However,the latest ota will create some issues with the TWRP recovery on unlocked bootloaders. There are some amazing peeps working on the issue. I will update the guide as more info comes in.
Update: 01/11/2013: So Team Unlimted has done it again, you can now root your Evo 4g LTE with hboot 2.09 by using Dirty Racun. This means that you will be able to now get s-off!!!!!!!
Update: 12/13/12: So there has been a new OTA that gives you hboot 2.09. Unfortunately LazyPanda and DirtyRacun will not work with the new hboot. You will need to use the HTCdev method found in section 2. At the moment you will not be able to get s-off with the new hboot so hopefully you did not accept it. If you did you will need to wait for s-off. In the meantime all you can do now is unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery. You will still be able to flash roms, but kernels may be different.

This guide is divided into 5 main chapters with the last chapter dedicated to giving credit where credit is due. You must complete all chapters to gain full root. Here is the way it works. The methods in this guide will only give you either s-off or unlocked. You still need a recovery and have the superuser installed. The info for that will be in the following chapters.

Chapter 1: Pre-Root Info

For best results, experience shows that USB 2.0 ports work best, not 3.0.
What is Hboot you ask?

Hboot is what HTC calls the bootloader on their phones. The bootloader is like the BIOS on your PC except a little different. It's essentially the most basic program on your phone where everything gets transferred/loaded from. The hboot # is an important piece of info for root purposes since updates often change this. And in updating the hboot a lot of the time the root exploit is closed.

So how does one get to Hboot?

**Please note that if you try this procedure before the phone is completely shut down, it won't work. The problem is, there's no visual cue to let you know when the phone is completely shut down. Just because the screen turns off doesn't mean the phone isn't still booting down.

I've found a way to help determine if the phone is completely powered down. It requires that you plug your phone in to charge. When you shut down, the screen will go off, along with the charge indicator. Wait for the indicator to come back on. Even though it's back on, the phone still isn't ready; you should wait another 10 seconds or so. Then give the HBOOT procedure a try. If the charge light doesn't go out after you let go of POWER, wait a few more seconds and try again. When the light does go off when you release POWER, it will work; just keep VOL-DOWN held down, and HBOOT will come up.

Google Wallet Important info, please read

If you ever plan on using Google Wallet please read this very carefully. There is a very good chance that you can brick your secure element which is what allows you to make secure transactions using Google Wallet. Please do the following before you do anything else in the guide.

Go to and open your Google Wallet. Then go into menu>settings>reset Google Wallet. THAT'S IT!!!!

You will need to do this before doing any of the following in this guide. And the same goes for every time you flash a rom.

What is S-ON/OFF?

Back in the days of the OG EVO having s-off was always the goal when you rooted a phone. But with HTC locking the bootloader and a tool to unlock it, we do not need to have s-off. HTC has given us a backdoor so to speak and enabled us to leave s-on and still root the phone. So what is the difference? Well "s" is your security and having s-on means you have your securities turned on. With s-off, you will have your securities turned off so that you can set permissions to read and write onto the system partitions, think flashing or installing of roms. "S" is like setting administrator rights on the computer.

So why should we care about getting s-off, if HTC lets us unlock the bootloader? Well with s-on there are certain things you can and cannot flash to your phone. Radios, and kernels do not get flashed like s-off phones. There are ways to flash them, but the procedure is different. More on this later on.

Also on s-on phones the bootloader will be watermarked. This means it will say at the top of the bootloader "unlocked" which is a dead giveaway of a rooted phone. Also this is a great account that happened to an actual developer, ropodope: Spint's Policy Put to the Test. So you can see that having a watermarked bootloader is not that bad.

Chapter 2: S-OFF/Unlocked Methods

Thanx really needs to go out to all of the awesome devs we have for our phone. Even though we already have s-off, our devs continue to perfect and find easier root methods. We now have 5 different ways to get s-off. I will go into more details on the methods and it will be up to you to decide which way to go.

so here they are:
DirtyRacun/BabyRacun

So with the hboots(1.15 & 1.19, and 2.09), the exploit that LazyPanda used was closed. But with DirtyRacun, you can now get full s-off. This will work with all phones that is on software version 3.15.651.3. ~~This will not work with software version 3.16.651.3 which is the latest from the recent OTA~~. You do not have to get s-off by running DirtyRacun. The method of unlocking the bootloader still works. However, flashing roms and kernels(info on kernels is in the second post) will be more work then a s-off phone depending on the rom you flash. So please read both and decide which way want to go.

When you took the latest ota 3.16.651.19 Dirty Racun does not work. But now the awesome devs from Team Unlimited have now found a way to get s-off with Dirty Racun. They are calling it BabyRacun. If you have this ota then you will need to use BabyRacun.

DirtyRacun/BabyRacun S-Off Method(works on all HBoots):

Method #1: DirtyRacun:

Ok so you have the latest hboot all is not lost. The devs from Team Unlimited IO has just found away to root hboot 1.15/1.19/2.09. This method will now work with all hboots.
On their request I will not have instructions on how to use their method.

Couple of points to know ahead of time:

If you have an older hboot then you can still use Dirty Racun. You will need to run a ruu that will upgrade your phone to one of the newer hboots. It does not matter which of the newer hboots you choose. They will be provided on their website as well.
You will need to either install Ubuntu or create an Ubuntu Live Cd in order to use DirtyRacun. For instructions on how to do this, go to step#1 in section 1 of this guide.

You will need to use USB 2.0. This will not work with USB 3.0
Only Windows 7 (32 bit) or Ubuntu 12.04 (and newer) 32bit are supported. (Thus a Live Cd is the best way to go)
After running DirtyRacun you will need to install a custom recovery and either flash su(superuser) file or flash a custom rom. See Step 2 and 3
Follow directions very carefully.......so please read and read and then read some more before trying this.

EarlyMon's Ubuntu LiveCD/USB primer:

Thanx to EarlyMon we have a guide that should help you with Ubuntu commands. You will need to use this if you plan on running Dirty Racun with Ubuntu or if you need to use Ubuntu to unbrick your phone.

Booting is not fast. Even when it looks to be hanging up, give a few minutes.

The only snag people seem to hit sometimes is getting networking up so give it a test run, and if it causes trouble, it's still fixable. (I understand the newer Windows will shut down the NIC before shutdown and you many have to go into device manager to stop that - again, we have a thread on that, I'm not a Windows guy.) Reasonable to expect that you'll get a driver pop-up and then a lan card icon in your upper right. Tap that to config your wifi drivers if it comes up. At that point, I prefer to tap the empty wifi icon and uncheck wifi, give it half a minute and then repeat to check it back on. That seems to scan more quickly for networks in my case.

You need the two Unlimited tar.gz (tgz) packages for Linux, one for s-off, one to unbrick.

Or, you could just put the Unlimited Dirty Racun links in an gmail to yourself, and then visit your gmail with Firefox to get to those links.

Launching Firefox is easy, it's an icon on the left panel. Choose to save both files. Iconify or quit FF once you have the two files.

Get a terminal via control-alt-T.

Tab key auto-completes on command-line, following commands use it to save typing.

For each command make sure to <TAB-key> <ENTER> after typing it.

In terminal window, go to your downloads subdir -

[HIGH]cd Downloads[/HIGH]

See the two tgz files -

[high]ls -l *tgz[/high]
Run this for each one -

[HIGH]tar zxf (replace_me_with_file_name).tgz[/HIGH]

Follow all Unlimited team's instructions.

To confirm what directory you're in, if you need to -

[HIGH]pwd[/HIGH]

To change to a different directory -

[HIGH]cd (directory_name)[/HIGH]

To get a listing of files where you are -

[HIGH]ls -l[/HIGH]

To run an app in the directory you are in, put dot-slash in front of the app name, no spaces -

If told to sudo a command (app name), such as fastboot -

[HIGH]sudo ./fastboot (rest_of_fastboot_command)[/HIGH]

When done -

REBOOT -

I'm sure there are buttons in Ubuntu for that. Here's what I use in the terminal window -

[HIGH]sudo shutdown -r now[/HIGH]

That should get you there.

Method #2: BabyRacun

So like any other OTA's, rooting phones will always get harder with each new OTA. This is why you should never take an OTA even if you are only thinking about rooting. Team Unlimited has now found a way to root your phone that has the latest OTA(3.16.651.19). It is basically Dirty Racun, but with some extra steps in the middle. I believe that the Baby Racun step downgrades the hboot(do not quote me on this) so that you can run their 3.15 ruu found on their website.

Ok like before, I will respect the wishes of Team Unlimited and not go into too much detail on the process. For a full detailed step by step please head on over to Unlimited.IO.

here is the overview:
1. unlock the bootloader
2. install TWRP recovery
3. run BabyRacun
4. re-lock the bootloader
5. run the 3.15 RUU
6. unlock the bootloader again
7. run RabiesShot.exe

Step 1 Unlocking the Bootloader

Step 2 How to get TWRP recovery

Step 3 BabyRacun

extract DirtyRacun files into the android folder you created when you unlocked the bootloader.
run BabyRacun as per Unlimited.IO

Step 4 Re-lock the bootloader

on your phone reboot into the bootloader and select fastboot
open command window on the android folder you created earlier
enter this command:

Step 5 Run the RUU

use the 3.15.651.1 RUU found at Unlimited.IO

Step 6 Unlock the Bootloader

unlock the bootloader via HTCdev.

HTCdev Method

This method is something that htc has done to keep their word on providing us with bootloaders that are not locked down like on some other phones. however, there are some things that you should know about it, if you are planning on going this route. Yes the bootloader will be unlocked, but you will have s-on still. However, this also means that the bootloader will be watermarked and this will void your warranty on the phone.

And yes with this method, you will be able to flash roms, kernels and such though you will still have s-on. Once the bootloader is unlocked all you need to do is have a custom recovery and either flash a custom rom or flash the su (superuser) file and then you are good to go. However, the kernel that comes with the rom will need to be flashed separately. And it is done by using the fastboot command. Please refer to the second post in the After Root section for kernel info.

An Overview of the process:

1.Clear Google Wallet
2.Go to HTCdev and follow directions to get your bootloader unlocked
3.Install custom recovery
4.Flash the su file or you can flash a rom of your choice

Make sure that you have htc sync installed and that you have the latest java running.

HTCdev bootloader unlocker
1.Clear Google Wallet
2.Go to the htc website:HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader
3.At the very far right there should be a drop down menu.
4.Just follow the steps. and use the files that you downloaded earlier when asked.
5.You will then get an email and follow directions according to the email.
6.Congrats!!!!!!!! you have now just unlocked your bootloader

Here is a step by step as stated on the htcdev.com site.
1.power off (make sure that fastboot is disabled. settings>power>uncheck fastboot
2.Press and hold power+vol down
3.With the vol buttons highlight fastboot and select it with your power button.
4.Connect the device to the computer via usb cable
5.Create a new folder and call it android
6.Download the first three files and save it to the android folder
7.Right click on your android folder while holding shift and select open command window here (3rd or 4th option).
8.In the command window type:

9.you will need to copy the long block of text that is displayed
Right Click > Mark > highlight the block of text > Right click to copy
10.The first line you should highlight should be:
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>
and end with:

11.Paste the text into the token field and then hit submit.
12.You will then get an email with the unlock key and commands to finish the process.
13.Once you get the email download the attached .bin file and move to your android folder you created earlier.
14.Open the command window (right click+shift, open command window here) and type:

15. You will then see a disclaimer just select yes.

basic over view:

you will need at least the su file installed and flashed so that you get root permission to add in superCID.
you will need adb and fastboot for this method to work. but since you have to be unlocked first you can use the same folder and adb files used to unlock the bootloader. if you do not have it, then you can go here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/671150-mini-sdk-all-rooter-needs.html. extract the .zip file into a folder (i'd call it android)
download the two facepalm files(do not extract them) and move them to the android folder.
open the command window from that folder and enter the commands as shown in the facepalm op.

Moonshine

Ok here is another method to get s-off. It is recommended to use a livecd of linux(Ubuntu is recommended), but it is not necessary. You can use Windows for this method. I will only include the Windows method. If you want to use linux then please go to the Moonshine website: http://moonshine.io/instructions/

prerequisites:

uninstall htc sync
htc drivers installed
no android software that can communicate with the phone(ie doubltwist or pdanet)
pc with access to the internet
your phone needs to be on 3.16.651.3 in order for moonshine to work
disable fastboot (settings/power/uncheck fastboot)
unlocked bootloader
it is recommended to be on a stock rom(rooted) vs a custom rom
do not use usb 3.0

1. download the file for the HTC Evo 4G LTE(windows)
2. unzip the file anywhere on the pc as long as you know where it is.
3. right click on the unzipped file and run as administrator
4. congrats!!!!!!!!!!!

rumrunner s-off

OK so thanx needs to go out to beaups and fuses. If you did not know, the latest OTA (firmware version 3.17) was not rootable(no s-off).......until now. thanx to rumrunner s-off we now have root again for the latest OTA.

just a reminder that you should never accept an OTA, especially if you plan on rooting your phone. this habit should be applied to any device.

anyways here is rumrunner:

first off i will not be doing a play by play as it is better if you follow the devs instructions and not mine, since they know best....what i will be doing is just giving you an overview in the hope that it will make it easier for you to understand what the devs wants you to do.

ok so here are the prerequisites:

this will only wok in either linux or windows.
virtual machines are unsupported
if you are on windows:
- have the latest htc drivers
- no htc sync(it needs to be deleted)
- any program that needs to communicate to the phone...no pdanet and such
- disable all internet securities and firewalls
a working internet
usb debugging turned on
fastboot disabled(settings/battery/uncheck fastboot)
make sure not to have any passcode or patterns for lockscreen
use usb 2.0....there is connectivity issues with usb 3.0
must be on 3.17 software and firmware versions
you must be unlocked....please see the HTCdev method for instructions
you must be on a stock sense rom or run the risk of bootloops or worse

ok so here it is:
1.download the correct file for the htc evo 4g LTE.....there is two....the first one is for linux, while the other is for windows.
2.extract the file as explained in the guide
3.run the soju.exe
4.accept the terms and conditions
5.Congrats!!!!!!!!

now this will give you su and busybox so there is no need to do that as described in chapter 4. if you want you can stay on stock after running rumrunner, but you will still need a recovery so proceed to the next chapter.

WinDroid HTC EVO 4G LTE Toolkit

First off thanx should go out to WindyCityRockr. This is not a root method really, but more of a tool that you can use to do numerous cool things. This toolkit will guide you through on getting your bootloader unlocked; you can get recovery; and even get s-off with this toolkit. This toolkit will get your phone s-off using various methods depemding on what your firmware is. rumrunner which is the current s-off method for with the latest ota is in the works......so if you have the latest ota, software version 3.17 then you will have to wait until the dev can update windroid with rumrunner.

Chapter 3: Installing Recovery

The next step is to get a custom recovery. The recovery is where the magic happens. It is where we can wipe the phone clean, install roms, kernels, tweaks, mods and themes. Just remember that as long as you have recovery all is not lost. It is also where we can backup the phone by making a nadroid backup (more to come on it later on) so if anything goes wrong you can always go back with your backup. Remember that nandroid backups are your friend.

so here is how you do it:

1.go to openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-jewel.img to download the file.
2.move the file into the android folder you created earlier when you unlocked your bootloader.
3.on your phone you should be in the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option. if you are not in the bootloader menu then power off the phone and then press and hold power+vol down.
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7)
6.enter command:

7.from the bootloader menu reboot the phone.

Chapter 4: Finishing the Root

Now to finish the root process you will need to do one last step. This involves gaining root permission so that you can make changes to the system partition(ie. deleting bloatware) or so that root apps will be allowed to run. There are two ways you can do this. You can either flash the superuser(su) file. This is what will allow you to stay on the stock rom, but still gain root permission. Or you can flash a custom rom which has su cooked in. For me always I will choose a custom rom over stock any day, but that will be your choice to make.

here are the options:

Option A Flash the SU file

1.download this fileSuperSU Download
2.once your phone is rebooted connect the phone to the pc and set it as disk drive and move the file over to the sd card. do not put it in any folder, it needs to be on the root of the card.
3.go into recovery then power off then press and hold power+vol down.
4.select recovery from the bootloader menu using the vol up and down keys and the power buttons.
5.in recovery select install (make sure that at the top that the external sd card option is selected and then navigate to the su file your transferred over.
6.slide the bar to start the install "flash" of the su file.
7.reboot the phone.
8.now we need to update the su binaries. go into the app drawer and open the superuser app and agree to update the binaries.

Option B Flash a rom

1.clear Google Wallet
2.download the rom of your choice and transfer it to your card.
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup
5.select wipe from the main menu and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select flash zip from sdcard
7.find the superwipe file and select it.(optional)
8.find your rom and select it.
9.reboot.

first boot will take a bit longer then normal, so be patient.

Chapter 5: Credit

I wanted to devote this last section to the awesome devs and others who have worked endlessly on freeing our devices from the grips of carriers and manufacturers. CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!on getting your root on. Now its time to get your flash on

The world is your oyster and it is time to make a pearl (not really sure what that means for your phone, but it sounded cool:smokingsomb

. In this section I will go into more details on all things root related and how to perform them. I will cover things like kernels, roms, and nandroids in full detail.

1.Root Apps

Now that you are rooted, you can start to use root apps. I will try cover some of the root apps that are essential to root users.

Please resist the impulse to use Rom Manager. For one it requires that you switch recoveries to Clockwork Mod and it will not work with TWRP. And also it tends to be very buggy and may not wipe really well. I also do not recommend apps that say that they can flash roms as well. DO EVERYTHING MANUALLY IN RECOVERY. This way you will know the ins and outs of your recovery. You never know when something goes wrong and that is all you have.

Titanium Backup ★ root and Titanium Backup PRO Key ★ root

Ok so this is one is essential to root users. There are two apps you need for this. The first one is the free version. The second one is the pro key which is not free, but it unlocks some of the best features of TB.

So what is Titanium Backup (TB)?

It is an app that allows you to freeze and unfreeze apps and even delete them. Basically, it is recommended that you freeze items first before you go deleting anything. This is done just in case that your phone decides to freak out because you deleted or froze an app that is essential to run the rom properly. If it freaks out, you can always unfreeze it. If you freeze something and nothing happens then you can go ahead and delete it safely.

The other feature that TB offers is the ability to make backups of your apps and its associated data. It will back it up to the sd card for safe keeping. What is cool is that you can make a TB backup, flash a rom, download TB from the market, and then restore the backup. All of your apps and there data will then be restored. There is no need to re-download all of your apps. You can even pick right up where you left off with your apps as data is also restored. The only thing you will have to be careful is to not backup and restore system apps(they will be in red). The can interfere with the current rom and may cause the rom to be very unstable. Only backup and restore user apps with data.

ROM Toolbox Pro or ROM Toolbox Lite

I included the lite version as it is free and I understand that some are on a budget. However, if you can it is in everyone's interest to invest in the pro version. Now this app is an all in one app. It has the same features that TB has but it has much more. The only thing that I will recommend that you do is to flash roms, and themes manually in recovery. Do not rely on apps such as this to do everything for you. It is better that you get to know your recovery. You never know when what can happen and all you have is your recovery and nothing else.

Now that we are starting to see custom kernels, this app will become more important. This app will allow you to fine tune the kernel and allow you to set the min and max of how the cpu is to run. My Backup Pro or My Backup

This is an app similar to TB but one of the cool features is that it can backup contacts and sms messages without interfering with the rom as their data is tied in with system apps.

2.TWRP Recovery

TWRP stands for Team Win Recovery Project. But what is recovery? Well the phone is divided into three parts. You have your android os(Ice Cream Sandwhich or Jelly Bean), bootloader, and recovery. Recovery is like a mini os and it is where the magic happens. It is what you will be using to flash kernels, roms, themes, and mods and tweaks. It is where you will be doing nandroid backups and your wipes. More on all of this later.

TWRP is just one recovery. The other recovery is called Clockwork Mod 5.8.2.4(CWM). However, as of right now that one has been pulled due to it creating empty misc partitions which could brick your phone. apparently they are working on a fix for it now. So until they post that it has been fixed, DO NOT TRY IT. Coming from the OG EVo, CWM was never a good recovery as it did not wipe very well. I can't say that when they get it fixed that it will be any better so I would stick with TWRP. But that will be up to you to decide.

So I will go into what you see on the main screen and the menu selections and give you a brief explanations.

Ready?

On the main screen:
1.Install You will use this to flash roms and .zip files. Please see the flashing section for more details.
2.Wipe This is a very important part of recovery. Wiping properly will ensure that whatever you flash will have a clean environment to install into. Also it is a great way to fix any issues that you may have. Wiping dalvik cache and cache usually will fix most of the smaller issues.

here is a brief description of each:

Cache This is where the phone's caches get cleared up. Cache is basically a temp file. The CPU uses cache memory to store instructions that are repeatedly required to run programs, improving overall system speed. Occasionally they can get corrupted and thus affect performance of apps and the phone in general. Clearing cache can help with this.
Dalvik Cache What is dalvik cache? It is where the Dalvik Virtual Machine looks at your apps and system framework and creates a tree of dependencies that is stored in dalvik cache. This will optimize how your apps will run. It is also why your phone will take longer to boot up after you wipe dalvik cache. It has to build the tree of dependencies back up. Dalvik cache can also get corrupted and thus cause performance issues on apps and the phone in general. Just like cache, wiping dalvik cache can help with any small bugs or issues.
Factory Reset This is where TWRP will wipe data. Doing a factory reset will not erase your rom or unroot you. It just wipes data and if you are stock it will feel like it came out of the box. However, if you are on a custom rom like aosp, it will not return you back to stock. It will just erase any of your settings, apps, and return it to a state of being like it was freshly flashed.
System This will wipe your system partition of your phone. This is where your custom(stock) rom is located. So wiping this will wipe your rom clean from the phone. This is important if you are flashing another rom. DO NOT WIPE THIS UNLESS YOU ARE FLASHING A ROM. Otherwise when you reboot, you will not have a rom to reboot to.
External Storage This is your external sd card. DO NOT WIPE THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE YOUR SD CARD BACKED UP ON YOUR COMPUTER. You will most likely not use this option.
Internal Storage This is the space alotted on your phone for apps and data. Again DO NOT WIPE THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE YOUR SD CARD BACKED UP ON YOUR COMPUTER.

3.Backup This option will create a nandroid backup. For further details please see the Nandroid Backup section.
4.Restore This is where you will restore your nandroid backup
5.Mount If you need to transfer files to the sd card from your computer, then you will need to go here. The last option to Mount Usb Storage will give you access to the sd card provided you have the phone connected to the pc via the usb cable. Unmount the phone when you are finished transferring files.
6.Settings Most of the selections here is not necessary so I will not go into it. I doubt that you will be needing to go here very much, if at all.
7.Advanced There is stuff in here that you will most likely will use so click on the show button for more details.

In the menu here you have the options to:

Copy Log to the SD Every action that the recovery performs, a log of the actions is created and kept. This a handy tool that can help troubleshoot when something goes wrong. You will be able to see exactly where the recovery had issues. By selecting this you will be able to move the log to the sd card and then you can use either the built in file manager or you can reboot the phone and use a file manager of your choice (astro/ es). You can also view it with your computer.
Fix Permissions You will most likely use this if you have any force closures (fc's) or have apps fc'ing all the time. This will hopefully fix it.
Partitioning SD Card This option is not really needed as the Evo Lte has plenty of space for apps now unlike the OG Evo.
File Manager This is a straight up file manager that you can use to navigate to and select files.
Terminal Command You can open up a terminal command window here and use linux commands.
HTC Dumlock here is a quote from teamwin

HTC Dumlock is a workaround for devices with HTC's unlock that cannot flash boot from recovery. Put simply, we make backups of recovery and boot, then we flash the backup of recovery to boot. When you reboot normally, you'll be in your recovery, but since your recovery is flashed to boot, you can make changes to boot. We've added some extra features to TWRP 2 to allow you to easily restore the backup of boot once you've booted your recovery with this method. We also have a universal version that works with any recovery by using updater zips.

8.Reboot You can reboot the phone directly from recovery. You can choose where you want the phone to reboot into.

You can reboot into system which is how you reboot into the phone.
You can boot into recovery, if you like.
You can power off directly from recovery.
You can boot into the bootloader as well.

3.Nandroid Backups

So what is a nandroid backup? It can be best described as a save point in a video game. It can basically save everything except for the radios. And like in a game, if you messed up or you just want to go back to a previous point you can always restore that nandroid backup. Just remember that nandroid backups are your friend. Until you feel comfortable flashing roms and such I would recommend that you do a nandroid backup any time you make changes to your phone. Do a nandroid backup before you flash a custom rom, kernel or themes and maybe one after you get everything setup how you like it.

How to make nandroid backups in TWRP:

1.on the main screen select Backup
2.keep the first three checked (System, Data, Boot). the others are optional.
3.(optional)you can create a name for your nandroid backup. Just do not use any weird symbols or spaces in the name. I usually put the name of the rom I'm on.
4.at the bottom of the screen there are some options for you to make:
Enable Compression is where the recovery will compress your nandroid backup. This will make the nandroid much smaller saving you some space on your sd card, but it will take more time to do.
Skip MD5 generation on backups Skip this option. There is no real reason to skip the MD5 generation.
Use external SDThis option will save the nandroid backup to your external sd card.
Use Internal storage This will save your nandroid backup to your internal storage (also known as an internal sd card). If you choose this then I would recommend that you compress the nandroid backup as they can be quite large.
5.swipe the bar to make a nandroid backup.

congrats!!!!!!! You now have made a nandroid backup. Now I would keep this nandroid backup somewhere safe on your computer and even on the cloud(ie Dropbox). I usually only keep two nandroid backups on my card to save room. I have one nandroid backup of a rom i really like and one of the current rom.

How to restore a nandroid backup:

1.in recovery select restore
2.locate the name of the nandroid backup that you would like to restore to.
3.keep the three that are selected( System, Data, and Boot). You also have the options to either rename the backup or delete it if you like as well.
4.restore the nandroid backup by swiping the slide bar at the bottom.

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!You have just restored a nandroid backup. Now all you have to do is reboot the phone.

4.Flashing a Rom

Now that you are rooted, its time to try some custom roms. Why stay on stock? When we have some great roms out now that is waaaaaay better then stock.

So here is how you flash a rom:
First you will need to clear Google Wallet. Go into Google Wallet and into menu>settings>reset Google Wallet

1.download a custom rom of your choice( DO NOT EXTRACT IT. LEAVE IT ZIPPED UP.) Optional: Download the superwipe file from here:[MOD]Superwipe - xda-developers.

What is superwipe? click on the show button for an explanantion:

Superwipe is a flashable script that will wipe /boot /data /system /cache and /devlog. Since dalvik cache is in /data it will also get wiped. Why do you want to do this? Well you really want a clean environment for the rom to install into. This is only a precautionary step and is not completely necessary. But I highly recommend it. It only takes a few seconds to do so it can't hurt to do it.

2.transfer the .zip file(s) to the sd card via usb. Connect the phone with the usb cable. On the phone select disk drive. A window should pop up on your computer or you can navigate to the sd card. Either copy/paste the file(s) in or just move the file(s) over to the sd card. Next select charge only to unmount the card from the pc.

3.go into recovery. power the phone off>wait 30 sec to ensure it is off>press and hold the vol down button and tap the power button(no need to hold it as it could power down if you do). This will take you to the bootloader where you will select recovery.

Now most custom roms will have a 4 in one restart option. Where you can select where you want the phone to boot into. It is usually recovery, bootloader, hot reboot, and reboot.

4.in recovery, select backup and make a nandroid backup(instructions are in the nandroid backup section)

5.go back to the main menu and select wipe. Wipe cache, dalvik cache, factory reset and system(for best practice do it 3x to ensure a clean environment for the new rom to install into.)

6.in the main menu select install.

7.the cool thing with TWRP is that you can select multiple .zip files to flash and you can select in what order to flash them. Make sure that you select superwipe first (optional) then the rom of your choice. Doing it the other way(flashing the rom 1st and the superwipe next) would flash the rom but then wipe the rom as superwipe will wipe /system which is where the rom is. I would wait to flash kernels. Flash the rom and get everything setup making sure that everything is working, and then flash the kernel. more on kernels later.

8.swipe the slide bar to install the zip file(s).

9.reboot the phone(unless you are hboot 1.15, see below for explanations).

Congrats!!!!!!You have just flashed a custom recovery.

Now if you have Hboot 1.15 then you will need to do some more before you can reboot the phone. Basically, the recovery will not ba bale to write to the boot partition. This is where the kernel gets installed into. A kernel is needed in order for the rom to work. You will not be able to boot up otherwise. What you will need to do is flash the boot.img seperately. There are several ways to do this. Please see the kernel section for more details.

5.Kernels

What is a kernel? A kernel basically is the go between hardware(phone) and software(rom). It regulates how much juice to provide and when to provide it. So how do i flash a kernel?

How to flash a kernel with hboot 1.12

1.download the kernel of your choice.
2.transfer the file over to the sd card via usb cable.
3.go into recovery. power off then press and hold vol down and tap the power button. On custom roms you can just boot into recovery by selecting the restart option (with the phone booted up, hold down power and select restart)
4.make a nandroid backup (see the nandroid backup section)
5.on the main menu select wipe and wipe only dalvik cache and cache.
6.back to the main menu and select install .zip
7.(do not flash superwipe) find and select your kernel and swipe the slide bar to flash it.

Ok so you have hboot 1.12 which is good news as you can achieve s-off. S-off is where your phone's securities is turned off allowing the user access to and make changes to the system partitions (think flashing roms, kernels, and themes. More on this later.)

Before you do anything here - back up your sd cards!

here is an overview:
1.install Ubuntu
2.gain root access
3.run Lazy Panda
4.update Lazy Panda

Step 1: setting up Ubuntu

Ok this is only a precautionary step as some have reported that when running Lazy Panda their phones get stuck in Qualcomm Download Mode. If this happens you will need Ubuntu either installed on your computer or have a live cd or usb setup. In section 3, there will be more details on how to fix this. it has happened to a few and it is fixable. Who knows some of you may like Ubuntu and will want to say goodbye to Windows all together

Prerequisites:
1.You will need to make sure that you have well over 5g of space on your computer, CD or USB flash drive.
2.Make sure that you have your pc connected to a power source.
3.You will need an internet connection

You have three options on how you want to have Ubuntu on your computer.
1.You can install and run Ubuntu alongside or instead of your current operating system.
2.You can run Ubuntu from a Live CD
3.Or from a Live USB.

The last two is where you can try Ubuntu out on a cd or usb flash drive. The option is yours to make on how you want to do it. so here are the detailed options:

Option 1: Install Ubuntu directly to PC

1.go here and download the 32bit version:Desktop | Ubuntu
2.get a blank cd and burn the file you just downloaded onto the cd. if you need a guide for that here you go:Burn a CD on Windows | Ubuntu
3.put the burned cd into the disc drive and reboot your computer
4.select your language and then choose you option on how you want to install Ubuntu. Select run Ubuntu alongside or instead of your operating system. The option will be your to make. You can also make a Live Cd as well
5.make sure that you also check to install third party
6.select install now when everything is setup

Option 2 Live CD

If you feel as you may not want Ubuntu on your pc then you might want to try either the Live CD or Live USB. Option 3 Live USB

Step 2: gaining root access

There are two methods to gain root access. What does this mean? To get root access you need to have the superuser file flashed (installed) so that you can get root permission. Root permission is what you ultimately want in order for Lazy Panda to work.

The two methods are Zedomax and Regaw. What is the difference between the two you ask? Well Zedomax will give you root, but it does not wipe data so your settings will be safe. it also does not install a custom recovery. However, the Regaw method will unlock the bootloader via HTCdev and give you root permission as well as a custom recovery called TWRP. Which is better? Both are easy to do and neither really has any advantages over the other. So.......the decision will be up to you.

Make sure that once you have recovery, you do not flash any custom roms just yet. You will want to wait until you have s-off first.

Zedomax Method

The Zedomax Perm Root method will provide root privelages, load Superuser and busybox without flashing a custom recovery. This method will not change your current setup and will allow for root only apps like Titanium Backup to be installed.

You can do this on your own if you like. Please see section 1. for instructions. The Regaw method is just an automated version of section 1. however, it only works for those who are on software version 1.22.651.3 and below

cd $HOME/Down<tab-key>

Next, make sure that FeedPanda-RELEASE-Jewel-Linux.tar.gz is there -

ls -lFa

Next, comfirm that you have a good download -

md5sum Feed*gz

Confirm to - 0125966552a70f5b648b17c8949ef338

Next, if that's the only file there, you need to unzip and unarchive it -

tar zxf Feed<tab-key>

Confirm you have a file called FeedPanda -

ls -lFa

Now - go munch some bambo!!!

sudo ./FeedPanda

Make sure to get in that ./ because it means: don't search for it, it's right here.

Step 4: Updating to LazyPanda 1.12.2222

Almost done! Now that you have s-off, it is recommended that you update your hboot to Lazy Panda 1.12.222. This will enable a working fastboot.

1.use the PJ75IMG.zip file you downloaded earlier
2.transfer the file over to the external sd card (/sdcard2 aka /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd) via usb cable
3.Make sure that fastboot is disabled, settings>power>uncheck fastboot, power the phone off.
4.power+volume down to turn on
5.the bootloader should find the file and load it and ask you to accept the flash, if not, select fastboot using the volume keys to scroll, tap power to select
6.press vol up to flash it
7.press power to boot when prompted
8.delete the PJ75IMG file from the sd card

I like equal time for MyBackup Root - won't muck about with the device id on restores.

SetCPU has a tendency to waste cpu cycles, sometimes dramatically. Use a kernel / rom daemon instead wherever possible.

If you want s-off, you may get stuck in Qualcomm download mode - very brick-like, and the only way to fix this is using Ubuntu. So, we recommend going for s-off using Ubuntu to begin with so you're all set if you have to take that step.

To do that, you need to be rooted first - for that, either the zedomax or regaw methods will do.

If you do zedomax to root the stock ROM and then use lazypanda to obtain full S-OFF you will not lose any user apps or data. Using HTC dev wipes the phone.

Not sure if feedback is allowed, but I just wanted to give a huge thanks for this write up and one stop shop for information. I ended up needing practically every section except Regaw because I had previously done it. I tried to S-off via windows. Phone bricked. Had to load ubuntu, etc, etc. I did unbrick and get SOff without a heart attack. I'd never used Ubuntu before either. Thanks again!

I bricked a half dozen times too, after your first recovery, It's no sweat.

Question for you: After your unbrick, did your sd card contents come back?

First time you ran feedpanda after the brick recovery it should have failed. Then the sd should have come back. Correct?

Twice mine did not. I'm still trying to figure out what causes the sd card contents to not come back.

When I try to run the FeedPanda app as Admin, it won't connect to the phone. I have the current drivers installed, and do not have HTC Sync installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ah yes it seems there are a few steps missing for that part of the guide. You're phone needs to be have USB debugging turned on and you're phone set to charge only.

I will add that in to the guide when I get a chance.

Not sure what was going on, I restarted the computer twice, then changed USB port and it started working. I am now S-OFF!!!
