Help magic & no 3g & internet

hi & happy new year,
i have a vodaphone branded htc magic but have an o2 sim in it which works fine apart from when i try to use the internet away from home (i use the wifi at home).
i took it into an o2 shop & they said that it was the phone as i have never seen a 3g sign come up on the top of the screen, for it to connect through.
can anyone help with my problem as i am paying for this service & cannot use it.

Can you get internet at all away from your home? i.e via your network?

If you can, check the settings to make sure 3G is enable:

Settings -> Wireless Controls -> Mobile networks -> Make sure the box "Use only 2G netwokrs" is Un-ticked

If you get no internet via teh network at all you'll have to check your APN settings {Internet/MMS settings}

I wonder if the APN are set up for vodafone so when you have the O2 sim in the phone will happily roam on the O2 2G network but by default has data usage disabled whilst roaming.

The APN settings are easy to change to those needed for the O2 network, just search the net for the settings
