Mail will only use Exchange accounts !

The mail program that comes with my HTC phone (2.3.3), will only work with exchange accounts. I have created a google account (Gmail) and the mail program can see this account. But If I delete this google account, and change it to a Exchange account, the mail programs works fine.

Will the default mail program only works with exchange/pop3 account ?

Should work with IMAP as well.
