    Model: Samsung Galaxy S4
    Carrier: Vodafone
    Firmware Version: 5.0.1
    Rooted: No

Okay, so I updated my phone just over a week ago to 5.0.1 and for the first couple of days it was fine. Then all of a sudden I couldn't open any messaging apps without them crashing. This includes Samsung's default Messaging app, Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, you name it. I tried most of the recommended solutions (settings>app preferences>find app>clear cache, then a wipe of the cache partition) to no avail. I also noticed that when trying to install apps after the update around 50% of the time I got a error: "Unknown error code during application installation: -501"

Now I can't find any mention of this error anywhere on the forum so I know it's a weird one. The even weirder part is that after a couple of days everything went back to normal and I could text/message again. That is, until today when everything went haywire again.

I can install apps fine, with the exception of Android System Webview, which I consistently get the -501 error for, so I'm led to believe that this is the root of the problem. Can anyone tell me how to update it, or if the problem may yet go deeper? Thanks

Lollipop is pure shit. Revert to Kitkat. That's what I am considering to do that because of my issues. I can't even move the icons. TouchWiz always crashing. In the other hand, I can't find any advantage on this firmware update with plain flat white screens consuming more battery power and not enough contrasted screens. :(

People don't like change. At first I didn't like Lollipop either, but now I couldn't go back to KitKat if I wanted to. I get better battery life, the color schemes aren't as bad anymore (except the stock messaging app...ORANGE?? lol) and my phone runs more smoothly and faster after clearing cache partition and factory wipe

None of those good things happen to me. Only issues and I always used dark desktop PC backgrounds, and a white or much lighter screen does discharge any battery much faster, it is well known. I did al you say and more, even on Safe mode. I wish you luck.

I have to say loud and clear! DON'T UPDATE. Your phone will turn into a piece of SHIT.
I had to downgrade to KITKAT and now it's OK. Thanks God it was possible.... Samsung said that it is not possible?????

I just upgraded to lollipop. No issues. Only some apps not working. My s4 it is working awsome. I like better the layout of settings , apps etc. The later you get the upgrade the better. Same was with Nokia, several years ago.

Lollipop is the best update for Android I've ever had and I've been with android since the G1 days. The solution to get the best enjoyment out of any firmware upgrade is to factory reset after the update.

My phone is giving errors like
    "Unfortunately, google play has stopped"
    "Unfortunately, facebook has stopped"
    "Unfortunately, touchwiz home has stopped"
    "Unfortunately, samsung keyboard has stopped"
like these ... every time it comes up with a new error.

I was using 4.4.2 ... I upgraded to 5.0.1 lollipop but still the problem persists.
My device also reboots randomly. During processing , it keeps on rebooting after every 10 minutes or half an hour or sometimes after 2,3 hours.
I wiped cache, made factory reset.
Even the problem is in the safe mood.
What should I do ??? Please help ...

For those of you who may be facing problems with the new Lollipop update, see S4 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide.

In the first instance, try wiping the cache partition as per #1.3. Failing that, a Factory Data Reset as per post #2 of the guide.

If you still have problem that means the update files has issues. You can take it to your provider and have it flash by them. If you have sd card take it out and see if it is ok. Good luck.
