I remember on my Nokia N95 I got from...somewhere...a sort of Europe map pack for Google Maps, which meant that I could use it offline, or even if I had internet access the places would load instantly from the phone, rather than having to stream the data as I looked about and such

Is there any such equivalent for the Desire?

    Cheers!

None that I am aware of, though if you plan your route with Google Maps apparently it caches the maps, in case you lose connection en route.

I think you need to shell out for a commercial app for offline maps.

You could try one of the apps that uses "openstreetmap", that is downloadable. Its possible you may be able to import it to the phone.
