I had an application installed and working perfectly. an updated came, it download it, and start the installation, and since then it is in "installing...." permanently. nothing i've done, removed it.
I've removed the application from the phone, reboot the phone, took out the battery, restart it again, still it appears as "installing...."
I've done the suggested things here in the forum (clearing the cachge, etc) nothing helps!

I have a motorola milestone with android 2.1 version.
    Please help!

    Thanks,
    Willy.

If you have tried clearing Market cache and rebooting then probably it id just a Market problem and you need to wait a bit and do the install later on.

goto Settings > Applications > Manage applications
    Click Market
Press uninstall updates which will reset market app to factory setting

Btw, is your application's name "Lookout" maybe?
I have the same problem as you with update of Lookout.
Other apps which I updated later had no problem with installation.
    Strange.

    Hi all,
I have a one week old HTC Desire and have never had a first-time successful download of an app. I have cleared caches, turned the 'phone off and on and in the past eventually got a download. I have five apps now:
    Google Sky Maps
    Google Earth
    RockPlayer (paid)
    GOdroid (a Go game)
    Qype Radar

I am attempting to download LEO (a deutsch-englisch dictionary) and Space Physics (a game, paid). Both are stuck at Starting download...

That this is my first post is sad since in every other respect the Desire is a great device and Android seems to be a good platform. I am not even interested in packing the phone with apps but it would be nice to be able to get the few I want. Oh well, at least it works as telephone!

One thing that may relate is that the first app I downloaded was Sky Map. It was my first day with the phone and I didn't know about the Market and went to a link I found via Google search. I went to androidpit, if I remember correctly, and downloaded from there. I got a message that I needed to turn on allow Unknown sources, which I did. When I found out about the Market, I uninstalled and dl'd from Market. (Unchecked Unknown sources, have never checked it since). Well, since then, nothing has been reliably downloaded.
    Ho hum

OK, weird. After posting I canceled the downloads and within moments they started by themselves! and installed and everything looks (for the moment) OK. But the question of why the problems remains. If it is something I'm doing (right or wrong), I'd really like to know.

You might want to post you rpoblems in Applications or Desire forum and not the Milestone forum.

Is the market download section empty now? it means that it doesn't know which application you have to notify you about updates?
    I'm lost here...

I had thd same problem a few days ago. Here's how I resolved it:

    1. Backup App - I used Astro but I suppose you could use Titanium Backup or other app
    2. Unistall from your Settings menu
    3. Reinstall from backup

The 'installing' notice is now cleared from the market.

    Hope this works for you

I've already uninstall the application. application is not in the device at all, but still shows under the market as "installing..." with grayed out "install" button.
    Nothing i do clears it.

Just let it be for now. If you desperately need to install it get the *.apk file and install from the SD card.
