A new app for rooted users that significantly boosts speed with browsing and downloading over your network or wifi.

I have tried using this app but it cuts off all of my network connections. It doesn't seem to work for me but maybe someone can post results if it works for them.

Thanks for your input cookie. Yeah I couldn't even get it to work, and seeing that you got worse results than better ones, I plan on not downloading it at all. Thanks again cookie monster

I tried the trial version of this app and completely lost my tethering ability. It's all DNS related errors but i can't trace down a fix for it. Uninstalling didn't wipe out the changes it made to my phone. Does anyone have insight on this? I even downloaded an app called SetDNS and switched from Google DNS to open DNS (I assumed that was default).

Nothing I do will repair my original wireless tethering settings. PDA net proved useful in connecting via USB (which is how I'm online at the moment) but still no DNS fix for wireless tether. Any input is appreciated.

This is ridiculous. All the app does is move you to Google DNS servers, which ONLY impact your initial lookups and DO NOT impact your throughput speed whatsoever. It also throws in ad blocking, which you can get for free.

Such crap. For $5 you MIGHT see a few milliseconds shaved off your DNS requests. Don't waste your money, people.

Look here for more information about Google's public DNS:

    Google Public DNS

It has proven to have mixed results, some independent tests have shown a mixture of slower and faster lookup speeds, and all by orders of parts of a second. This will not at all improve your download speeds. It only improves the brief time after you click a link or open a connection where the device translates the domain name to an IP address. That only happens once during any given connection.

I don't know the actual files they modify to do this, but I'm sure it could be implemented quickly for no money. I'd just have to look to find where Android keeps its DNS servers.

Thanks for the heads up man! It would be nice of someone could modify all that for free (considering you're only gaining a few more milliseconds of your life loading pages) lulz.

Hi! The DNS is set using setprop net.dns1 x.x.x.x and setprop net.dns2 x.x.x.x.

You can run these commands in a rooted shell, but the settings are overwritten when changing from wifi to 3g and back again. I wrote setdns a couple of months ago when playing with these settings. It just resets the nameservers back to your preferred settings whenever the network settings change. I appreciate that it needs cleaning up in places.

There's also lots of scripting that can achieve the same effect. Nicely documented over here: http://androidforums.com/optimus-m-...sader-review-transfer-speed-tweaking-app.html

I've had a look at masqed crusader. I think that one of the problems is that it relies on running dnsmasq in the background to proxy the DNS requests. It uses its own config file, which includes the ad-blocking mentioned earlier in the thread.

However, dnsmasq is also used for tethering because it provides a DHCP service and DNS proxy for connected devices. This *might* be the reason that some are finding that it breaks tethering.

I had a look at running something similar within setdns, but I couldn't reproduce any measurable difference between using, say, the google servers with a dnsmasq cache and calling it directly. I'm guessing that the Android OS caches the requests anyway, so any speed improvement is that gained by using alternative nameservers for the initial DNS request.

All that said, when I'm connected via 3G my network provider proxies all port 80 web requests (Orange UK). That means that all the DNS querying is done by Orange rather than on the phone. If your network provider does the same thing then changing DNS will make no noticeable difference whatsoever when not connected by wifi.

I am running a Droid Charge rooted with imnutts's PeanutButter Jelly. After downloading Masqed Crusader and turming it on, my speed tests went from 5-6 mps to 11-13 mps. So the app worked for me. However, my "Wireless Hotspot with USB Tether" app (awsome frickin app BTW) does not work. Not a single device that I own can connect to the hotspot anymore. This is extremely frustrating due to the fact that I dont have home internet. I have tried uninstalling both apps and reinstalling the hotspot to no avail. I have reflashed PBJ and even factory wipe and reset on CWM. Still not working.

    Any suggestions?
