Ok I am on my 4th refurb of the eris which is actually finally working but this phone keeps unlocking via the menu button in my pocket.

Sometimes I put my phone in my pocket with the screen locked but awake and I use the handcent pop up feature but I had other Eris's for 8 months without these issues

Is there an increased sensitivity on my refurb?

I know I shouldn't have the phone lite when in my pocket but it is habit

If you enable a security lock pattern on the phone(settings--> security--> set unlock pattern), it should help with your unlocking problems. It's an added step and takes some getting used to but it becomes almost second nature once you are used to it. Also, Handcent works well with it. When you have popups enabled, after typing your quick reply and hitting "send", it forces you to perform your unlock pattern before actually sending the message. This helps to keep you from pocket texting people.

Unfortunately, the only other viable solution I've found is to root and try running a Vanilla or Cyanogen-based ROM with a different lockscreen with the "menu-to-unlock" feature disabled. I'm currently using Conap's CELB 2.8 ROM which is set up exactly like that.

Yes. Enable Unlock Pattern or Get Root and Delete "/System/app/HTClockscreen.apk & .odex" and the Original Android 2.1 Lockscreen will appear :)

It's a capacitive touch screen so there is no way your pocket can unlock it via the menu button. yes, it is possible that the end key gets hit (happens to me all the time) but probably you aren't turning off the screen before putting it in your pocket. The lock pattern is useful but often tedious if you check your phone frequently. In short, turn off your screen.

(Dumb question) Are you turning off the screen everytime you put it in your pocket? The only way its possible for the screen to turn on, is if something is hitting the button. In my experience, that's really hard to do by simple putting it in your pocket. Do you keep keys or something in the same pocket?

what is a capacitive touch screen?

when I get a text it awakens my phone and all the action in my pocket doesn't let it sleep again

It's a type of touchscreen that uses the human body's ability to conduct electricity to detect where the screen is being touched.

I just did a little test with my phone. I took it, turned the screen on, and rubbed it all over my pants and could not get it to react. In fact, I can't even get it to register when my finger is wrapped in my shirt or shorts.

This might sound silly, but is it something that has occurred in different types of pants? Does facing the screen away/toward your leg have any effect?

What the other guy said. It means that your skin has to make physical contact with the screen, both the regular AND the soft keys in order for them to function. From my experience even having a bit of moisture on your screen removes your touch ability so your problem is either a software glitch or its not locked before pocketing(which I do do from time to time and the send button usually ends up getting hit making a cal :/ )

I have had nearly identical issues as the OP. I"m on my 2nd replacement and this one seems MUCH more sensitive than my previous 2.

I wait tables for a living, so I keep my phone on silent in my pocket all day and before I enabled the pattern lock my Eris would unlock and wreak all kinds of havoc on my menus and settings whilst living in my pocket.

Handcent has some helpful settings to keep pop ups enabled and stop them from turning the screen on... so that coupled with the lock pattern has helped me, but I'm still unsure what will eventually happen when I get a phone call while I'm at the restaurant <:/

One definite difference for me is the screen protectors I bought from Verizon for this replacement don't have a lower area to protect the home/menu/search keys whereas both of my previous Eriseseseses had that lower area protected...

I'm suspicious that the slight increase in sensitivity is helping my phone to unlock when it is facing my leg and the sheer pocket fabric of my dress pants does absolutely nothing to help the situation. Sometimes it's like I'm not wearing any pants at all.

It has to be a software glitch, I had an eris for 8 months and never had a problem until now

My wifes incredible does nothing in my pocket. If I lay my phone flat on a couch, screen to couch it will unlock instantly!

I am pretty sure this new firmware caused something, I am already on my 2nd phone

Well that's a known problem with the incredible. If you lay it down on a flat surface, the touchscreen starts acting up.
