I just switched over to handcent as my messaging app. I changed the defaults and switched off the notifications function on original app. Here's my question... just switching off the notifications from old app, messages still come thru to old app...does that take up some form of memory? If so, how do I turn off un-wanted app so messages do not go to it anymore? Any hints, info or thoughts on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Mine were still in the original messaging app. When I got rid of Handcent, I didn't lose any of my messages anyway. Because of this, I use SMS Popup. My main reason for Handcent was to get a popup notification.

Thanks to everyone that replied to this thread.

I was able to prevent double notifications but if I was to go directly to the stock sms app, the messages are still there... does this eat up any memory on the phone or do these messages just sit around in cyberspace until they are deleted?
